alsa and 4 speaker system

How can I get my surround to work with alsa? (2.6.0 kernel version plus current libs)

Right now, I can only get 2 speakers working, I have surround, and it doens't want to work.

I unmuted all channels, played with all the sound levels and gotten nothing, not even a peep out of the back-r/l speakers.

I really don't want to go back with emu10k1 drivers from opensource.creative.com. They did the job, but alsa is sometimes said to be very nice.

Sound card: SB audigy gamer
Speakers: Altec Lansing 4 pc + sub
System: Slackware 9.1 2.6.0

SO i was fooling around with alsamixer, got my surround working once, changed something, sound stopped working again.

What else is that, if I am not playing music, emu10k1 driver is not loaded in alsamixer. So the controlers for my speakers disappear. Odd? Indeed, but as soon as I open xmms and hit play, poof, emu10k1 is back in the list.

Does ANYONE have a clue to how I can get permanent surround?
