Alaska Penguin

Okay, I'm leaveing AK for a few months, I want to store my computer, can I use a storage unit, the temp can get to -30 sometimes, mostly 10 - 25 in the winter though. Can my hp hang at these temps?

what a question :) , bests -cg

Try it.
P.S. And I guess you can eliminate any cooling system you might have.:)
Or you said to store it not use it, com'n it ain't fun:D

The cold won't be a problem but if you take it a warm environment immediatly afterwards condensation can be a problem.

Stuff it in a box between some blankets and/or sweaters. I'm inclined to think that -30 would be kind of bad for it. At least this way it may add a couple of degrees. It can't hurt as much as a cracked hard drive.

blankets and sweater can't give warm to a computer (because the blanket isn't warm if there are nothing warm inside... this isn't a human bodies).
I don't think cold is very good for a computer but your box should survive... still if you have a better place to store it, it can be a better idea.

Give an Hi! for me to Alaska Natural-Living Tux's friends :P

If you use a liquid crystal monitor, you may want to read the manual for it. I think they can be damaged in very low temperatures. Also, remove any ink jet cartridge from your printer.

Last winter, a town in Minnesota had a low of -60 degrees.

COLD

-60 is DAMN COLD. Here is AK where I live -60 isn't very often, if it is, it's with wind chill, never still temp. That's cold! Okay, howa about harddrives, chips, ect.... Thank you - bests- cg

Ooops

Didn't read the upper most posts. CRACKED HARDDRIVES?
Maybe I'll find another way to store this thing.

Penguins are so cool, in fact, my other and I want to paint a huge penguin onto the temp home, the shack on wheels (home built camper on the toyota). A huge TUX. That's fun. A pet live penguin would rock :)Bests -cg

Where in Alaska are you?

captgoodnight 09-05-2002 09:42 PM

Where

I'm kinda scared to say. Oh hell, Anchorage.

Live penguins - There was recently a story in the local paper about a penguin being caught in a fishing net up here in AK. It was way odd, but I guess the little chap was a friend of another fishing boat, or, was out for a very long swim. It may have been a first for such an incident. The little guy was real cool looking. The picture had this fishing guy standing against the boat's rail, out at sea, in full fishing work ware, with this little penguin standing next to him, way cool, calm and all. They said at first the little dude was trying to bite, then he gave in and accepted the ordeal. Kinda friendly, I believe they set him free after the picture was taken. Great story. Great penguin. Earlier there was mention of condensation. If you make a concerted effort to keep the box dry before freezing and while thawing, the contents of the case will probably come out a-ok.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I will keep your machine(if it is powerful enough, hehe )
Dont you at least one friend in Alaska who can take care of your machine in the warm comfort of his/her home while you're gone? Just a suggestion.
