Unhappy adduser & usernames with caps

Hi,
I have a server that I recently upgraded to RH ES v3 and have discovered that a script I wrote to create accounts has stopped working when the username has a capital letter in it.

For example:
/usr/sbin/adduser Test

Returns:

adduser: invalid user name 'Test'

It seems to work fine if I user lowercase letters. Can anyone explain what is happening here and how to fix this? Thanks!

- User 'Test' contains illegal characters (uppercase); please choose another

You cannot user uppercase letters in user names in *nix.

This may be true of Slackware and apparently RH EL v3, but most Unix variants have no problem with upper case characters in user names. In fact, I can create accounts with upper case letters on my RH 7.3 box without any problem. I also know that you can do this on AIX, Solaris, and HPUX. Anyone else have any ideas? Thanks.
