Adding Linux to NT boot loader

I have 3 windows, and so I have the NT boot loader. How should I do to add Linux to my NT boot loader? What are the steps to follow? Should I install Grub in the MBR or first sector of my partition?

1. When you install Linux, make sure to install lilo (or grub) on the Linux / partition, not the MBR.

2. Copy the Linux bootsector to a floppy with the following command: dd if=/dev/hda5 of= /dev/fd0/bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=1
(Replace "hda5" with the correct partition desigation for your / filesystem

3. Boot into Windows and copy "bootsect.lnx" to C:\.

4. Add the following line to boot.ini: C:\BOOTSECT.LNX="Linux"

If I were you I would just install linux and install LILO into the MBR.

I have done this several times and LILO will automatically set itself up to boot you other OS's.

I understand that some people don't do this, though I don't know why not as it always has worked very well for me picking up winme/2000/XP without a problem.

Maybe someone can outline the problem with doing this? but I am not about to change the way I so this...

i heard that while that method usually works, it does not work properly with NT pre-win2000, but i am only repeating hearsay, so don't take me at my word!

I use Lilo on the MBR which then quite happily selects the windows NT boot loader which I then use to boot my multiple windoze installations.

If you are starting from a blank system with, for example, Windows 98, 2k and linux, install Win 98 first, then 2k then Linux.

the 2k installation will add '98 to its boot loader and linux (certainly Suse managed it automatically, red hat I had to edit lilo.conf, which is very simple) will add NT to lilo.

Here are two links that will help you.

http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/mini/Linux+NT-Loader.html

The dd command is entered in a console screen or a terminal window.
