Add/remove software error

When I try to install some new software at first I had no problem. Earlier today I unselected all the options on the left panel and selected gnome, KDE and XFce 4 which installed without issues.

Now when I try to install something I get the following error "Unable to retrieve software information. This could be caused by not having a network connection available" but I know I do because I can access the net.

What is causing this and how can I fix this please? I appreciate any help.
