accidently killed my desktop

I'm currently running SuSE 9.1 Personal and I was trying to kill one of my windows via the kill command (default i think is Ctrl + Alt + Esc). Basically you get this nice skull and cross bones and I ment to kill a window but i accidently pressed on the desktop. Everything disappeared so I rebooted but when SuSE finishes loading, at the time when I would get a login screen, it just goes blank (ie black screen).

I have also tried going into fail safe mode but it also loads and then just stops. I can't type anything. I tried googling up answers but have not been able to find anything related to this problem.

I have tried the following things:

- I tried pressing Ctrl + Alt + F1 when SuSE finished loading up (when I get the black screen) and it still didn't work.
- I used the SuSE CD1 to go into rescue mode and from there I tried mounting, and it doesn't seem to work. I tried the "mount hda" command and I got the following error: "mount: can't find /dev/hda in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab"

So I cded into etc and there is no folder called fstab or mtab... I also cded into /dev/ and found that hda is a device since when I cat it produces spits out lots of crap while cat on other devices, which are obviously not mine, prints out that the device doesn't exists. Can anyone help me out with this?

Well, I ran dmesg and this is what i got:

VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem) read only.
Trying to move old root to /initrd ... failed
Unmounting old root
Trying to free ramdisk memory ... okay
Freeing unused kernel memory: 212 k freed
md: Autodetecting RAID arrays.
md: autorun...
md: ... autorun DONE.

Also, I wanted to ask, would reinstalling delete everything on that partition? Would my apps still work if not? Thank you for the help.
