Acceptable fsck noncontiguous percentage?
 

Hi, just wondering what a normal amount of noncontiguous disk is. I have fsck set to run every 22 mounts, on a ~25gb ext2 partition (IDE drive). Normally I get 1.5-2.0% noncontiguous. Any idea what is a "good" amount? Or links to some sort of chart?

fsck reports the amount of noncontiguous space but it does nothing to remove fragmentation. Controlling fragmentation is an inherent part of Linux file design. It works well enough that, as far as I know, nobody has ever had the need to write a defrag program for Linux file systems.

That's about what I usually get.

fsck checks file systems for integrity and will optionally fix broken file systems. I set my fsck to run in the neighborhood of once every 200 boots.

Okay, thanks for the help. I knew that the Linux filesystem didn't need to be defragged, but it is good to know that my % isn't anything weird (I didn't have the faintest idea what was normal).
