Unhappy abiword dependencies!

I just downloaded rpm of abiword 0.9.2-1 for my RH 7.1 installation.
While installing it using rpm -ivh abiword.....
I am getting the error as failed dependencies
libz.so.1 is needed by abiword......

Can anybody please tell me what is this libz.so.1
And where from I can get it. And how to install it.
I am new to Linux so with all you dear linux users I am much encouraged to motivate the use of Linux.
Thanx.
Rajesh.

http://mirrors.rcn.net/pub/sourcewar...n/latest/zlib/

- you can get a source tarball from there and download it.
libz is a compression library which enables some programs to compress on the fly. to untar it:

tar -xzvf zlib-1.1.3.5.tar.gz

and then follow any README or INSTALL instructions.

I TRIED THIS TOO...
But sorry this still shows me the same dependency error though I see the required libz.so.1 in the /usr/lib directory.
Can somebody please suggest me the way I can get this abiword installed and running.
Thanx.

Problem Solved.

Hi Everybody,
I solved the problem of installing AbiWord. Thisway
I downloaded the dynamic tar.gz from Abi site.
I installed that and now no dependency error etc. Abiword is installed and running properly.
Thanks all who tried to help me.
Rajesh.
