a Truetype font resembling Windows' System font?
I gather that the Font Installer can obviously install only Truetype fonts (from my Windows partitioin, that is), because the only Windows fonts I can get are .TTF; and that System must not be Truetype, because it's unavailable. In that case, does anyone know a Truetype font that resembles System? I am used to System for my icons and text editors, and don't particularly like the Linux defaults for either.

I just had my wife check her WinXP fonts. There isn't one called System. There is a set of fonts called "system fonts" which windows warns against deleting, ranging from Arial on down the alphabet. All are true type fonts, which you should be able to install in your Linux system.
Here are a couple of links to some reading on installing windows fonts in Linux.

I can't explain that, because I've been seeing System in the word processor font list for years, usually right after Symbol. It looks kind of like Fixedsys.

There is no Microsoft font called "System".
It must have been installed by a piece of 3rd party software.

Again, I can't explain that. It's been in my font list every time I've reinstalled Windows; I think I've seen it since at least Windows 3.1.--
Well, this is peculiar. It's in my font list as it always is, but is not in the c:\windows\fonts directory with all the other fonts. Neither is the "fixedsys" font I mentioned. I can't explain that either.

I've seen that font a long time ago in Windows XP. Not more recently, though.

I respectfully disagree. Age doesn't make it worthless in most cases, but if you think it does, you could ask a mod to close it.
