Hi everybody , I want to do some innovative opensource project for my final semester .It should be small and to be finished within 2-3 months .

"Look for a need and fill it"

.. ideally you'd create something that people would find useful so try looking for a problem or a manual process that could be automated

Format conversion utilities are always handy... you get to investigate (RE) file formats as well

Buy an embedded board with a video and sound output.
Install Linux/GNU or BSD to it.
Design it so that it caters to the group of your choice.
