a question on pronunciation
ok
a question... (this is slightly meaningless) how is the word Linux pronounced? in the US, (based on listening to the Linux Show) the pronunciation is Linux>>>lynne ux (don't know if this is an americanism like simultaneous being pronounced s eye multaneous) yet the word appears to "want to be pronounced as" L eye nux = Linux It would be interesting to hear, especially from any scandinavian users, what is the correct pronunciation. S'just a word, and whatever is comfortable for you and yaddah yaddah yaddah not trying to start a war here, just curious. |
ok i pronounce it as leenux or lynux :) but its my own way and i think every person has his own way to pronounce it so do what you want its a free system so who are we to say it has to be pronounced exactly one way!?

According to Linus Torvalds himself, this is the correct pronunciation: lynne ux
Pronounced in fact exactly like his first name, except ending in an x rather than an s. |
The following web site has the audio files.

I think I can safely say that the pronunciation Linnucks (short i as in pit, short u as in bucket) is wrong in English, as it is not the original Swedish pronunciation, not a sensible direct anglicisation of it, and not based on the anglicised version of Linus' name.
as i suspected... lienux and not lynne ux not that it matters |
Well yes, it's natural for us English guys to say Linux with a long I as in Bind. But the correct pronunciation is that used by the creator. You wouldn't call Linus "Lyenus" because it's his name.
I will admit though, that originally I thought the correct pronunciation was "Lyenux" and have found it very difficult to switch the way I say it. |
