A Newbie's Introductory Guide to Linux in pdf format

Hi Everyone!

I'm going to introduce Linux to a friend and am seeking a very basic Introductory document to Linux in pdf format. He's presently a Fed-up-with Microsoft type.

This basic Linux material in English that I would like to give him need not go into the various possible distros, not how to install so different than his MS stuff he's been using.

Many thanks,
Khunphet in Thailand

Please define "very basic introductory document" better. What sort of info should it include?

There's so very much out there, and from what I can see, you use Linux, Khunphet.

Everyone is different with how they learn, or accept new information. Unsure if the desire or need for a specific format is due to your preferences, theirs, or that you feel it's just a good idea.

One can save web pages to a document and one can convert most text documents, as well as ones including diagrams and images, into PDF.

I'd just search, or review blogs, such as one which I believe was offered, here.

Also at the top of each forum page, such as Linux General, Linux Newbie, and Linux Software are various sticky threads, some of which may be helpful.

You may feel it's better to construct your own introduction, which you customize to how you wish to present the topic, and also taking into consideration your audience.

For me the best thing is illustration, such as "Here. This is my PC running Linux. What questions do you have if you were to use this operating system?" And then work with them and also browse the web to aid them to select a good distribution. And finally work with them to install and configure their Linux, if they like it.

It would help to know what Linux distributions/desktop environments your friend is considering using. Linux has many variations. The base is the same, but the superstructure may vary.

Check out labdoo.org and search for Linux.

If your friend is looking to use Ubuntu, he will find Larry Bushey's books about using Ubuntu MATE there.

Thanks to all who have offered their 2 cents worth for solving my desire to have a general introduction to Linux.

My friend hardly knew what I meant by the term "Linux" when I brought the subject matter up. I felt a bit disadvantaged at creating my own introduction to Linux as I seem to recall seeing on a forum a downloadable document meant to introduce Linux in a friendly manner (the original creator, the reasons for creating an alternative to Microsoft constantly changing OS lineup, the great community of Linux folks who excel at helping Newbies, etc.)

I intend to re-visit my friend (who is not a spring chicken, but a gent in his 60's) with several Linux distros (on separate thumb drives) that I have used myself as starters. But I felt that there must be some existing descriptive materials ABOUT Linux rather than any specific distros at this time just to help the chap to have a positive view in joining Linux users around the world as a Newbie.

I'll check out the sticky threads on various forums as well, but if anyone has ever come across a GREAT ready-made intro to Linux, I'd welcome your advice of where I can get that from.

Thanks to all.

OK. The mods didn't remove my earlier post (though I invited them to!) so I'll stick my neck out a bit further and hope I don't get clobbered for advertising. If you follow the link in my signature, you'll find links to a book called The Charm of Linux, which might be what your friend is looking for. I wrote it for fun when I was about the same age as he is now.

Lifewire has a pretty good intro to Linux for persons new to it, but it's not a PDF.

A Newbie's Introductory Guide to Linux

To all Forum Members who have taken time to help me out with introductory materials for Linux, I am most grateful!! I have already shared your contributions with my friend who seemed overwhelmed with the outpouring of assistance from forum members.

I will be visiting him again on July 21st to check up on how he has fared with the many very good contributions that have been suggested.

I myself have taken note of them and have started a collection of them for future use as well. I believe at this time, the friend has plenty on his hands so we can say our task is completed -- until some future time when he may need further assistance to get started on the Linux track.

Once again, my grateful thanks and appreciation to all who have helped out!
