A messy house

When using widows if you uninstall and reinstall many progs you end up with files spread here and there. Quite messy and unorganized. Then you have some progs makeing little changes to your registry which dont return to pre prog stasis if you unistall the prog in some cases. With unix and linux will I ahve to deal with the same thing?

a registry, no. with linux, you have system enviro variables set in boot scripts, and files installed and uninstalled by make. ldconfig takes care of the linking and uber-complicated stuff. the only real problems you'll encounter is if you want to have two different versions of a library present, like qt2 and qt3. doesn't happen much, tho.

I have a variant of the problem Isajera describes: I have Qt3 only, but many is the time I have given up trying to ./configure a downloaded program because it complains about not finding Qt2 (even thought I have Qt3 installed).

What should I do?

it complains about not having qt2 as you've not got qt2 installed. qt3 is not qt2. so erm... install qt2. the libraries are different, use different api's and are not interchangeable.
