A linux desktop on a vps for daily work?
 

Hello LinuxQuestion visitors,

The problem: I need to use some windows/mac software for work but I want to keep doing my daily work on Linux

I figured I could use the computer provided to me (that is currently running Linux but on another partition runs windows) to connect to a vps with a Desktop enviroment.
I could then use the vps to do my daily work while using the windows partition to run the required software.

This way I can use all the good of Linux, work from everywhere and still use the software needed to do my job when I am at the office.

The software I need for my daily work on Linux is: sublime text, vim, chrome, firefox, opera, and light gimp work.

I currently have a vps that has 4gb memory and a fast ssd and a gigabit connection. This could be used for that or I could rent another if needed.

The questions:

Are there major problems with this type of setup? (too slow because of some reason?, other problems? )
What technology to connect to the server do you recommend. (vnc? Spashtop? Others?)
Does anyone has some good tips to consider?
Would you recommend against this kind of setup for some reason?
What desktop enviroment would be recommended? I was thinking of xfce or lxde.

rdesktop connects to Windows remote desktop. I've used it to access a Windows box from 2 states away. There are a bunch of other RDP clients as well.

I might have wrongly made you assume I was looking for a windows vps.

I am actually asking about a Linux vps with a DE

Sorry, I misread. I use two methods: Tiger VNC to access a remote Linux desktop on Windows, or run Cygwin-X on windows and just run individual X applications if I don't need the whole desktop. Cygwin startxwin.exe makes the X apps pretty seamless with the Windows apps, including cut-and-paste.
