A Good Linux Magazine

Everytime I go to a local bookstore I'm tantalized by all the Linux mags and their DVDs packed with software goodness. Most of these mags are UK imports though, and run about $16 US so I find it hard to justify the purchase. I went online to see if I could get a subscription at a cheaper rate but some mags are over $100!

Well if I'm going to pay that it better be damn good. What mags do you read/subscribe to? Are there any US based ones that don't cost an arm and a leg? Thanks.

Hi

I believe Linux Magazine is US based.

But to be honest with you, the magazines are not going to be your best source of linux news and knowledge. That, of course, will the net and here. The DVD's and CD's on the mags are a good way to get a distro, but many times they are already out of date by the time you buy them. As an example, by the time Fedorca Core 5 hit the cover of Linux Format in the UK, there had already been three kernel updates. The magazines are a nice diversion but my advice would be to get the software online.

Linux Journal and Linux Magazine are both good--both $5 per issue.

Linux Format is good but--yes--expensive

I think Linux Format is a great magazine. I buy a copy when I see a few articles that interest me... usually that means 10 issues a year. I am also an ex-amiga user and it give me that same feeling as Amiga Format and also the editor of LF was the editor of Amiga Format - but that is besides the point. I find the DVDs annoying and redundant with most magazines. By eliminating the coverdiscs on a subscription and it lowered to cost, I would subscribe - but I am sure it wouldnt make much of a difference.

There's always Tux magazine. If you don't mind something in electronic format. And its free. Its aimed a little bit more towards people new to Linux, but I've found some good software from articles they've published.
