a copy/paste problem

I create webpages also. When I create them, I type out all the text in ABIWord and spell check it. Afterwards I copy and paste it into Mozilla Composer. Here are the strange parts:

1) It will only copy one paragraph at a time

2) and characters like:
" ' ( ) $ ^
and such all show up as question marks.

Why?

I ahve had similar problems using OpenOffice - I now save the file as text and open it in my text editor to put the tags in.
