3D graphics issues Intel GL40 w/4500M GPU

With the above mentioned hardware, I am experiencing trouble rendering 3D graphics with programs and games that are well within the capabilities of my computer and GPU. The issue manifests in ways ranging from displaying flaky 3D graphics, to rendering some or all textures in an improper color or not at all. I have also found that this is a far ranging issue within the Intel community.

However, my research as led me to believe that this many not be the result of buggy drivers, but due to an inadequate allocation of memory from RAM to the GPU due to a limitation fo the AGPgart "driver" within the Linux kernel. If this is the case, solving this problem would be as simple as allocating more memory from RAM to the GPU. In fact, the help file for AGPgart in the kernel configuration menu suggests that this is possible, and in some cases necessary. However, I do not know how to go about doing this.

I wish get feedback on my research thus far, and explore this option before going through the hassle before reporting a bug that may not actually be a bug. Any information I have found to be relevant is ported below. I will post more as requested. For any help offered here, I will gladly exchange my time in order to write an excellent help guide to other Intel mobile users.

AGPgart help file. Taken from the Linux kernel driver database: http://cateee.net/lkddb/web-lkddb/AGP.html Suggests that additional memory can be allocated with the use of "PCI accesses", whatever that is. (Not really code, but it makes it a lot easier to read through).

Code:
AGP (Accelerated Graphics Port) is a bus system mainly used to connect graphics cards to the rest of the system.

If you have an AGP system and you say Y here, it will be possible to use the AGP features of your 3D rendering video card. This code acts as a sort of "AGP driver" for the motherboard's chipset.

If you need more texture memory than you can get with the AGP GART (theoretically up to 256 MB, but in practice usually 64 or 128 MB due to kernel allocation issues), you could use PCI accesses and have up to a couple gigs of texture space.

Note that this is the only means to have X/GLX use write-combining with MTRR support on the AGP bus. Without it, OpenGL direct rendering will be a lot slower but still faster than PIO.

To compile this driver as a module, choose M here: the module will be called agpgart.

You should say Y here if you want to use GLX or DRI.

If unsure, say N.
It is interesting to note here that the Intel chipsets no longer use an AGP bus, but rather PCIe. However, when compiling a kernel, it is necessary to include this option as you other unable to include graphics support for Intel chipsets otherwise.

dmesg | grep agp and AGP (In the interest of saving posting save, will post entire dmesg if requested):

Code:
[ 2.468341] Linux agpgart interface v0.103
[ 2.468432] agpgart-intel 0000:00:00.0: Intel GM45 Chipset
[ 2.468740] agpgart-intel 0000:00:00.0: detected 131068K stolen memory
[ 2.493952] agpgart-intel 0000:00:00.0: AGP aperture is 256M @ 0x80000000

[ 0.000000] No AGP bridge found
[ 0.000000] No AGP bridge found
[ 2.493952] agpgart-intel 0000:00:00.0: AGP aperture is 256M @ 0x80000000
Confirming the above help file, the AGP aperature is set to the "maximum" 256MB. However, I cannot seem to find any information on what the "stolen memory" is, or the message about the "AGP bridge", or whether they are relevant.

For note, in this case I am using a custom-compiled 2.6.33-rc8 kernel. It is properly configured, and is irrelevant in any case, as this issue has persisted with the use of half a dozen other vanilla and distribution kernels.

/proc/mtrr:

Code:
reg00: base=0x0fffe0000 ( 4095MB), size= 128KB, count=1: write-protect
reg01: base=0x000000000 ( 0MB), size= 1024MB, count=1: write-back
reg02: base=0x040000000 ( 1024MB), size= 1024MB, count=1: write-back
reg03: base=0x078000000 ( 1920MB), size= 128MB, count=1: uncachable
reg04: base=0x077e00000 ( 1918MB), size= 2MB, count=1: uncachable
reg05: base=0x077d00000 ( 1917MB), size= 1MB, count=1: uncachable
reg06: base=0x080000000 ( 2048MB), size= 256MB, count=1: write-combining
Configured properly to the best of my knowledge. reg06 conforms to the AGP aperture mention in dmesg both in size an location.

The log shows that all the proper drivers are loaded successfully, without error. Again, it is confirmed that a meager 256MB is allocated toward graphics processing.

Also, we can see that I am not using Xorg, but HAL+KMS to configure the X server (which is, in fact, necessary with the new Intel drivers). However, the issue has persisted even when trying Xorg+FB+old Intel drivers deeming the method for configuring the X server irrelevant as far as I can tell.

Finally, glxinfo shows that hardware rendering is, in fact enabled. GLX gears also runs as expected. However, I don't pretend to really understand this output in the least, and can't seem to find much info of how to properly interpret it. I am mentioning this mostly because everything within the "table" is marked as "slow" or "none" which concerns me in the very limited way I understand it.

Finally, lspci -vv (if it can provide any help):

Again, this something I only understand in bits and pieces. (In the interest of confining this to one post, I have removed some Audio/USB/SATA/networking information that didn't seem relevant).

I've been trying to figure this out for a couple months now, so any help on this is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

*bump*

Surprising, I expected people to jump all over this one.

Seriously, though. Even if no one can help me, I'll take suggestings of other forums/mailing lists where I might find some help.

Please ignore this thread. Upon tracking down yet another bug on my system, I have uncovered a another whole array of problems. I have found that I am spending more time trying to configure my computer than I am actually using it. At this point I am, begrudgingly returning to Windows until the Linux OS has had a little more time to mature.

Good luck to everyone!
