2m floppy formatting

Whenever I try to use mformat -2, I get a core dump--I'm guessing that mtools is compiled without USE_2M by default--so where do I find what I need to reconfigure and recompile mtools so that I can make large-capacity floppy disks that the 'doze machines at school can read?
