2 questions (Change sound format and nvidia driver problem)

Since I have two separate questions, I guess I need to post in general.

1. I have a bunch of aif files which I wish to convert to mp3 and wave. What can I use to do so (I'm using KDE on FC2) Preferably with a GUI for sound editing because I would use it for other sound edits as well, but it's not required. (if it's does have a gui, something like goldwav is for windows would be great)

2. I compiled a custom kernel, and downloaded the nvidia drivers for my video card, I go through the install, and edit xorg.conf. Upon booting, the nvidia moduel is NOT loaded and xorg.conf has reverted to how it looked prior to my edit of it. Does anybody know what is happening and/or what I'm doing wrong?
