2 cents on my 4 linux days or so
 

i just started using Linux redhat 7.3 these past few days. wow.
my experience has been great.. everything that ive done and learned which im sure it very few compared to an advanced user
these words are merely just expressing how great linux can be
i remember when i first got my computer on Windows
i can remember the slogan, where do you want to go today.
but when i did have my computer on and online, it was like every place i wanted to be there was gone or was just a figment of my imagination
now that i have installed Linux , it has come back to me, whatever it is
i can learn more from my mistakes.. believe it or not.. took me about 8 or 9 reinstalls of RH just to get it online with my video and sound working right.
but it was worth it. the frustration made me happy in the end.
i feel like a kid in a candy store.
Linux should be with the slogan where do you want to go there?
Why? because you can get there..
im not bashing Microsoft. and i wont.. because i still like my Windows
sorry if this post might seem dumb or ignorant to all of you
but im new to linux and just posting how it has been for me in the short time ive had it up and running..

I too installed linux a few days ago, and love it. Although this machine is old and slow, I find myself doing everything on it. The only reason I run my windows pc is to share it's dialup over my ethernet connection... soon I'll buy a linux compatable modem.

As for my friends, they hardly ever noticed the difference. All they said was "hey, this looks different!", and then went on to the instant messenger Gaim and surfed in Mozilla.

I've had plenty of fun configuring things, and also using the free C compilers - something that was painless in Linux, but in Windows I had a lto of trouble getting a decent compiler.

i installed Linux also 8.0 a few days back, and i have no idea what im doing, i got on the net and downloaded AIM, is there another client that works for AIM too? i have no idea what im doing but tommorow im going to B&N to buy a linux book, im eager to learn

GAIM is a good AIM client, does of other IM clients too.

I feel exactly like I just installed Linux every time I stop by a friend who reinstalls Windows and Linux every other week. :)

:D This is why I frequent these forums. Seeing newbies discover Linux for the first time is just so fab.

By the way, is there any reason you used rh7.3 rather than rh8? I find gnome 2 to be significantly better than 1.4 which is what redhat ships with by default. Still, it's a little less solid than 7.3 was - 8.1 should kick ass though.

BTW, there's no such thing as Linux 8 :) It's like saying "Car XJ4" or whatever, there are only specific distros, so you probably are using Redhat 8. Have fun guys!

I just love linux, I'm still a newby in terms of usage, which is a shame seeing as I've used linux for the last 4 yrs, just as an enduser with no need to configure anything, But yeah, I spend more time in linux than windows, and when I use windows, there are usually two SSH clinets going along with hummingbird, just so I don't feel so far away from my favourite operation system.....If only I could get my father to see that linux is just as if not more desktop useful than windows.....

i didnt have enough cd's .. only 3.. so i d/l RH 7.3
i might d/l RH 8.0 later on

I have been using linux for about 6 months now so I am definatly a newbie still. I know that the power of linux is in the command line so I have been trying to discourage myself from using X.
