2.6.11 and Nvidia problems
Looks like there is a bug in the nvidia-installer which prevents it from correctly building the nvidia module. Anyone else experiencing problems with 2.6.11 and nvidia? I'll check the nvidia forums to see if there are any updates.

There are a number of patches listed in their forums. Guess you get to wade through them all and try them to see if they work for you. Easier for them rather than Nvidia having to bump out a new version.

This is invariably the case whenever the new kernel comes out. You will need to wait for the patch, do an extract only, patch nv, and then run the install. There are various issues as to why this is always a problem, having hooks to closed binaries in the kernel and so forth. You can check out the kernel.org list for some debate on the subject
The kernel guys want nothing to do with binary drivers and nvidia won't do an open source driver, so there is a bit of a deadlock there... Nvidia and the nv list guys keep up fairly well tho, even for those who want to be on the cutting edge.... Win4lin slows my kernel upgrades a LOT more...

I didn't have any problem compiling the nvidia driver on 2.6.11-rc4, haven't upgraded to stable 2.6.11 yet though.

Yeah, Nvidia 6229 won't install on my 2.6.11 kernel... I looked at the patches at the Nvidia site, and decided to roll back to 2.6.10 and wait for the dust to settle.

If you apply the 02-28 cumulative patch from nvnews.net the module should compile against the 2.6.11 kernel. Another solution I read is to disable AGP support if you don't need it. Under gentoo the 1.0-6629-r3 module in portage has these patches automatically applied.

I just went back to 2.6.10 too. I'd do away with the nvidia driver altogether if it wasn't for Doom 3 and Return to Castle Wolfenstein. I love free software, but gaming is an addiction :-) I even have a (gasp) xbox! But I'm gonna mod it and put some linux on there too ;-)

I broke down and patched the driver as kpex suggested... compiles fine with 2.6.11... of course adding 2 lines to lilo to boot the 2.6.10 kernel wasn't overly difficult, , but now I can play UT2004 with the 2.6.11 kernel installed...

In my personal experience, the 3d stuff is very sluggish using nv.

'nv' modules no longer works for me. The screen only goes at <640x480 (i think it's about 400x).
- and switches between an even lower res; useless.
Tried the nv news patch to no avail so will try gentoo method.
