when i'm wating for my red hat update agent to fail on me (again) it would be cool to switch on my TV card and waste a few minutes. but...

you guessed it - i can't get it to work.

i have red hat 7.1 running gnome and the gnometv applet. it seems that i have all the drivers for the wintv-go card (bttv.o etc). i read that to get my tv card to work i need to 'modprobe' each of the 4 drivers required. the details i followed were: /sbin/ modprobe bttv.o which i got the message back saying that module bttv.o could not be found. my bttv.o driver isn't in this folder but in /lib/modules/2.4.2-2/kernel/drivers/media/video/
i tryed the applet anyway and got the message: not working - to load - use - insmod bttv vidmem=0xe8b.... which i typed into the console getting a 'bttv driver already exists' reply.

any ideas? the card shows up on booting and is in the modules.config file with the line: alias char-major-81 bttv

would be great to get it to work! one less thing to dropto windows to do.

well what's going wrong?

what happens when you run xawtv. if've you've not tried xawtv, try it. it's cool.

as your device is in modeuls.conf it really should already be working... no need to modprobe. you shouldn't need to change stuff, as the wintv-go card works generically so that modules.conf line should be fine

use v4l-conf to detect your card. xawtv always does this anyway....

is xawtv a tv viewer for x? i had a quick look through both of my binary cd's and couldn't find this rpm file.

wellm, it's just a very simple tv progam, made by the bloke that does bttv, go search.. but it shjould be on your distro somewhere.

cheers for that and yes xawtv did work. now i'm sick of watching channel 5. have to find out how to change the channels - that part isn't exactly the most intuative part of the program!

im guessing that your from the us but if you know of any good sites to visit that can clue me up on creating channels for western europe....

this is also used by fbtv, a full screen, nonX app which is really simple.

I'd seriously recommend you ONLY use xawtv and fbtv, they're very simple and have no knobs on, so they don't go wrong, and both share teh same hotkeys, and conf file. there's Zapping and others, but they try to be too complicated, and also take up too much screen space

i read the man file and ran scantv which seemed to work ok. however now i can't see anything other than a blue screen. opening the channel editor shows no channels! could you tell me where the xawtv config file is located so i can check the file out. in the man file it mentions /HOME but i've checked there and theres nothing.

well, just copy EXACTLY what i pasted, to /home/you/.xawtv, it's all it uses to set it up, so all your problems will go away. delete the video channel tho...

i think the frequenices are different in london, i *think* bbc is 60, not sure... i know it is on the south coast...

before i submitted a bug i wanted to check just in case it was something i've done.

is the sound always so flaky in this app? the sound will be fine for a while and then just goes off. if i click on the mixer or bring up the options pannel the sound may come on again - or if that doesn't do it i have to click the mute/unmute button twice. as you can imagine - its pretty anoying. whats more strange is that there seems to be no order in the the sound failing, sometimes it's fine, sometimes i have to mess about every couple of minutes. my soundcard is a SB live and seems to work fine with everything else.

well, no it's fine. but i'd be fairly sure that your problem wouldn't invovle the app... i'd guess it IS your sound card somewhere along the line, assuming you're usnig a standard line out/in affair for sound on the card... that works at a completely basic level, and isn't controlled by any apps to any real extent. the channel can be affected on/off, volume etc... but what's actually there is purely hardware... so maybe there's somethign not so good with the line in for the SB driver...?

Yeah, right...here's what I get:

So what's video0 and why don't I have it?

I get really nice video, and xawtv must know where to look because I get TV just fine.

I just can't get scantv to work.

please don't drag up old threads. your question is not relavant to the original thread.

but please search... this has cropped up a number f times, and is probably because you are using devfsd, so will need to tell the relevant app to use /dev/video/video0 or something similar.
