Uninstalling everything pulseaudio doesn't help. Choosing a distro that has never seen pulseaudio works.

Those messages remind my of my first day with Fedora 8. I solved it by writing an .asoundrc file.

Can't say whether it would work again, though. What I do know is that my back-up server running 8.04 was having the same issues with the onboard intel sound chip; that was solved by installing alsa and switching devices in volume control center but I get only the most basic controls.

I tried Ubuntu for a couple of days. Didn't like that much ... So went and got Fedora installed.

It's been smooth sailing so far!
