Do you use a graphical login manager or not?
Why (not)?
If you use one, wich is it?

Welcome to LQ! I don't think you can post a poll yet, but if so, it didn't work.

To answer your question, I run Slack and don't use a GUI to login.
Couldn't tell you why, except Slack is setup that way by default.

I have tried to post a poll, but I can't.

I don't use a graphical login.
I think one of the strongest traits in Linux is its flexibility, and having the option by default to either launch X or remain in tty is a part of that flexibility. I also think these GUI session managers should include an option to shut them down and return you to a terminal if you wish.

i dont run a graphical login manager .but i use X 90% of the time
reason: bcause my X crashed more than once (my fault)and it would go in to an infinite loop on trying to to start the window manger
i wud rather type startx in the CLI :)

Most of them do.....
Just fiddle around with it ; You're bound to find the option. [:)]

I flip flop back and forth between run level 3 (start up in console mode) and 4 (kdm).

I like being able to run fast and clean in text-only, but I also sometimes like to just log right into X without an additional step.

When I do use a graphical login I like KDM because it seems a bit more flexible than GDM does.

Yes and No

At Work:
Init set to 5. XDM setup. Use windows X-client to connecto to X session on Linux dev box. Most of the time, I just SSH in.

At Home:
Init set to 5. Yes. XDM not setup. SSH in most of the time, unless I am at the console, then I normally boot in and use X to open serveral terminal sessions. :-)

Webserver:
No. I host my site at ServerBeach and they don't install X on their servers.

When I'm in X, I prefer KDE.

I'm running xdm in Slack :)

Cheers,
Tink

I run a GUI login, and I use KDE most all the time.

I just prefer it. On my server boxes there is no GUI at all so I don't use one :)

Peace,
Whitehat

I boot up into text mode. It's just easier and faster for me.

If I used a login manager I'd use GDM... 'cause it looks better, lol.

synaptical 01-30-2004 05:10 PM

nope, just startx. the login manager is usually one of the first things i disable. for some reason i can't stand them. :p

jeff0628 01-30-2004 05:55 PM

I use a gui login manager to boot into gnome, but to be honest I havent rebooted in so long I sometimes forget all about it! 94 days and 3 hours and still as fast as the day I powered up....

Thymox 01-30-2004 06:16 PM

I use a CLI login principally because I test out many different Window Managers quite often it is just easier to edit my .xinitrc script from a command line than have to boot to a GUI login, login and open an editor, edit this that and the other, exit to a GUI login and login again. Call me lazy :D

LoungeLizard 01-30-2004 06:43 PM

I use CLI I like the abiltiy to choose when I am going to boot my windows manager plus other family members are less likely to use my box when they cant figure out how to get to the net.
