LinuxQuestions.org - [GENTOO] fresh install, two nasty problems

Hello everyone, first of all I'm a Linux :newbie: .. !

I've been a system builder for many years now, but I just approched to Linux.

I ran Debian for about a month, I wasn't completely satisfied with it, I'm now testing gentoo, and as far as now I'm pretty happy about it...

This is what I installed:

Gentoo.2004.2
tarball stage 2 for P IV
K: 2.6.8
KDE 3.2.3

..now about my two problems..

1) Linux won't shutdown... if i just type "shutdown now", it will start the procedure, and it will freeze somewhere after saying

Saving random seed [OK]

for the records, reboot works fine, and shutdown -h also works..
on debian it used to work, and also during some earlier gento test installations it used to work.

I think I might live with this one... if you need me to paste some system logs...please point me to them..

2) I have an ATI Radeon 9800 ... I installed ATI-DRIVERS (emerge ati-drivers), and configured xorg-x11 using the ATI config tool (fglrxconfig)..

KDE work perfectly..not a problem.... BUT....when I try to logout from KDE to go back to konsole.... the system freeze ... I get a bunch of white vertical lines..

I have no clue what to do about this 2nd problem..
