*** USB external hard drive and USB memory stick

I use linux SuSE 9.3 and 10 on 2 different machines. Several months ago, a friend of mine did all the setup on both machines so that when I connected a USB memory stick or a USB external hard drive, the device could easily be detected, a window automatically poped up and I could copy/delete/etc.

After that, I did not connect any USB device until a few days ago. Now, when I connect a memory stick or an external hard drive to the machine with SuSE 10, nothing happens, absolutely nothing, I mean no pop-up, and not listed in /media or with the command dmesg. The machine with SuSE 9.3 is still fine though and the file fstab are the same on both machines.

Please can anyone help me out here. I really need to get this fixed.

Thanks.

try mounting the device manually. Bring up a console and as root type "mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/removable -t vfat" without quotes

where:
- /dev/sda1 is the location of the device
- /mnt/removable is the location where you want it mounted, make sure this file exists as well
- t filesystem .. prob either vfat or ntfs

once you issue this command you can then naviagte to /mnt/removable to view the contents of the drive

as for why it stopped working in suse, i am not sure...i use ubuntu
