World of Warcraft patching errors on wine

For the past several days I have been trying to run World of Warcraft on my linux machine to no avail. Initially I tried to run the game on Wine on my PC Linux partition, but desisted upon learning that Ubuntu is generally regarded as a superior gaming distribution. Unfortunately, I have had no greater success in this endeavour than in the previous one.

Patches 3.0.1 to 3.0.2 and 3.0.2 to 3.0.3 result in errors applying patch data.

Running WoW repair does not fix problem, nor does reinstalling the game.

I attempted to install the game by two methods:

1. Installing Vanilla WoW and Burning Crusade followed by patches 2.4.0-3.0.2. Errors applying the patches have occured at numerous different points during the process, and attempts to reinstall the patches invariably result in errors at the same precise points.

2. Installing Wrath of the Lich King. WOTLK always installs successfully, but the patches never do.

The following is the error message I receive:

The patch "enUSDBFilesClientGroundEffectTexture.dbc" could not be applied. (CRC mismatch: expected 0xf86ee458, actual 0xb57ff180.) If this problem persists, you may be able to solve it by uninstalling and then reinstalling the game. If you are unable to correct this problem, please contact Blizzard Technical Support. (BNUpdate: razz TCApply)
To check this installation for problems, click the "Repair" button. The Repair tool can automatically fix many update errors.

The part in quotations varies by patch, but that is the most common one.

I am running Wine 1.1.10 on Ubuntu 8.10. My hardware stats are as follows:

1. 3.00 gigahertz dual processor
2. 1 gigabyte DDR2 Ram
3. 3.Nvidia Geforce 7200 gs

The patches I am using are from Blizzard's downloader and mirror sites, and certainly legitimate. I would tremendously appreciate the assistance of anyone who can point me in the right direction.

Try later wine versions (like svn one) and report as a bug for developers.

What may be a good workaround is to patch it up on windows then copy the files over

I've had issues in the past with patching via wine, so I'd boot into windows, load up WoW and let it patch whatever it needs, then reboot in ubuntu and just run the wow.exe which has just been patched.

obviously its not an ideal solution, but it'll let you game for now

The problem is that you're still bound to windows.
