winex? Where to get? How to use?
I am about to be a noob (ok so I already am). Where do you get winex? Is there not a free version or another free emulator that lets you play pc games on linux? Why can't they just port directX somehow? What games are available for winex? I go to their website (transgaming?) and it (in my opinion) is not very helpfull. You can't just see a list of games! Honestly I am getting tired of using linux...so if anyone could please restore my hope I would really appreciate it.
One more question, do mod's for games work or do those require special attention too? |
To get WineX (known as Cedega now), here's a link:
http://transgaming.com and for the free version, go here: http://transgaming.org No offense, but you'll have to learn to do some good looking around before asking for help if you want to use Linux well. This question has been asked more than once. |
free vs. pay
since your here...whats the difference between free version and pay version?
|
Oh, all right :D. The free version is free in price and code, and that means it doesn't have some of the libraries that ave to be kept closed because of licensing (specifically CD protection decryption and installer formats). The pay version comes in binary format, so they can distribute these features.

to use is, extract it into what ever directory you want.
the go into the winex directory and type: ./configure after you do that, with no errors i hope, you type in this command: ./toolds/wineinstall this will build winex for you and help you install it. it'll ask you what directory you want to install to and build the registry for winex for you. the direcotries it'll build by default are: note ~{HOME} stands for your home direcotry ~{HOME}/.transgaming ~{HOME}/.transgaming/c_drive ~{HOME}/.wine i have to create the following directories myself: ~{HOME}/.transgaming/c_drive/windows/system32 ~{HOME}/.transgaming/c_drive/windows/fonts A not on fonts. find as many True Type fonts as you can and put them in the windows/fonts directory. if you have NO fonts in there it will complain A LOT! go under /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF to find some and copy them to the windows/fonts direcotry. other than that i dont know what else you need to know. dont forget this command: man wine it'll help you out a ton. enjoy! |

Ok. just kidding. Thanks for all the info. I will try and install it tonight. What distro's is it compatable with? I take it the free version is an rpm, so thats mostly FC2 and Mandrake right? Does wine run better on one distro better than another? I found the game list I am quite impressed. Thanks alot guys. Oh one more question, does this work on the 64-bit version of FC2? |
i dont trust RPMs at all. you can get it from transgamings CVS repository if you can get it to work.
i can remember where i got mine. it should be compatible with all distros that i know of. whether it works with FC2 64 i'm not shure. the 64 version should be backwards compatable with 32 bit programs. |
CVS?
Whats CVS?
|
CVS = Concurrent Versioning System. Makes things easier for developers by instead of uploading an entire program, they only upload things that they changed.

Ya Im very happy not that I redid cvscedega :) its works and if you get dcom98 installed afterwords its pretty much the same thing as if you bought it I might have left out something tho (I think it had to do with copyright protection but I dont seem to have problems with that yet) so ya I say at least look into cvscedega.(RHLinuxGUY pointed me to http://www.linux-gamers.net/modules/...p?articleid=45 it works) hope this might help you helped me a lot :)
