Wine programs can't load websites
Hello, all. I've been dabbling with many new things lately since getting my new laptop, and discovering the wonderful world of Wifi.
The snag of this is when I run Steam under Wine. It loads fantastically, fonts are all displayed (got the tahoma font I needed) and the games run great. I can even find server lists. The weird part of all this is that Steam tells me it can't find storefront.steampowered.com. I installed Firefox under my existing wine setup, and that also could not load the mozilla homepage or even google. What makes this particularly baffling to me is that Steam was able to connect to the game servers, and to download HL1 and all the expansions for it... so obviously it has some access to the internet, but it's fractured or incomplete somehow. I'm using Ubuntu Feisty Fawn, on a Gateway MX6428. My internet access has been through Wireless Internet to date, and has been pretty much flawless... under native linux. Once I'm using the wine layer, it goes a little nuts. Also, I was thinking that maybe the reason Steam was dying on the browsing part was it couldn't find IE. I grabbed IEs4Linux. That didn't solve the problem, but the weird thing was the IE install *was* able to browse the web without a problem. Thoughts? Suggestion? Any help is appreciated. Merlin |
Hello, do you have XFire installed on Wine also? When i installed xfire on wine, i was told that i needed to install some other mozilla application b/c it was required, the other app was to display websites in programs under wine. Unfortunatelly i do not remember what the name of that app was, but if you install XFire under wine it should install it automatically (with your permission of course). I wold think you would have XFire considering that your playing Steam games. But if you don't you can check it out at http://xfire.com so you can see for yourself. +++ what version of wine are you using? this might b an important factor. Well let us know, if you have luck getting your problem solved.

Ok, i checked to see the name of the program for running HTML inside programs, it is called wine_gecko. As i said, it installed automatically when i installed XFire. Good Luck,

Version of wine is 0.9.33. And yes, I have wine_gecko installed already. Steam required it, that's what (I think) it is trying to use to load the websites, and it's what can't resolve any URL's. Firefox bumps into the same problem. I'm half tempted to say that this is a permission problem somehow, but I'm running it as my normal user, and THAT can access internet just fine... so I'm at a loss. Thanks for your help! Merlin Addendum: The NWN patcher also can't seem to resolve anything. Maybe this is a DNS problem? That would make sense if all Steam used was IP addresses. |
Maybe, when i start XFire the sites in it load just fine (are slow at loading sometimes). I hope you can get some help from someone who knows more, but if you wan't root access and don't know how to get it look here. It's a blog where someone had a problem getting to be root http://fab.cba.mit.edu/central/?q=fo...ations_help/87 it is not the same as sudo it is an actual user account for root which when you follow the steps and get access you can log into Ubuntu with the username "root" and the password you configure and can modify whatever you desire. Good Luck,

It's not a permission problem - it's a DNS problem. I'm able to load up a webpage just fine if it's just an IP address, which explains why Steam was able to half-work. However, if it's a URL, it dies on impact.
SO, the question becomes - how do you configure/enable/install/fix DNS in wine? Merlin |

Nothing there really applied to me, alas. :(
I'm thinking that this is a problem somehow in the wine code itself. They have run into this problem before... so I'll either have to wait it out or downgrade to a version that doesn't have this problem. Merlin |
I don't have anything to help but I wanted to mention that I am having the same problem. I have Steam installed just fine along with the wine_gecko engine and the internet works just fine in wine for most things but the Steam main page won't load up.
