Which native Linux games are you planning to buy this holiday season?

Which native Linux games are you planning to buy this holiday season? I'm planning to buy:
  • Osmos
  • Machinarium
  • Amnesia

sycamorex 12-06-2010 01:26 PM

I'm waiting for the release of OilRush. They are going to release native linux versions for both i386 and x86_64 architectures.
http://oilrush-game.com/

mlangdn 12-06-2010 02:34 PM

OilRush looks pretty good!

D1ver 12-06-2010 03:15 PM

Definitely Amnesia. That games supposed to be very very good, and also an excellent laxative. There's a good review here (warning: language). I'll probably buy the 2nd and 3rd of the penumbra series.

I ordered my gaming computer parts today :D Intel i5 + nvidia gtx460

disturbed1 12-09-2010 12:33 AM

Oil Rush for sure.

Besides any LGP title, and a handful of other native Linux games, our collection is a decent size. Though I am quite tempted by Bandits if LGP ever gets it finished. I may pick up a couple of the new Hidden Object games that were recently released on Linux for our room mate. She and my Girlfriend both like that genre of games.

sycamorex 12-09-2010 01:58 AM

FYI, The Oil Rush release has been postponed till March 2011.

H_TeXMeX_H 12-09-2010 04:31 AM

I might get Oil Rush because it supports x86_64 ... but most other commercial Linux games don't.

I was thinking of buying Savage2, but unfortunately, it sucks compared to savage1, so it's not worth it.

Can't say that has stopped me playing x86 games on an x86_64 machine.
And yes,Oil Rush does look interesting.

rizzy 12-09-2010 02:46 PM

Oil rush looks good, i'm also waiting for these :)

I think if they're not gonna be open-source, and I have to pay for it, at least they should make it easier on me and make it work on 64-bit. It is an extra hassle to maintain 32-bit libs, so unless I really need it, I don't install them.

LXer: Another Humble Indie Bundle Is Coming

This just changed my answer.

D1ver 12-15-2010 04:19 AM

The second humble indie bundle is live :) http://www.humblebundle.com/

Does anyone know if all the games in the bundle work in x86_64? I've stopped using multilib and really don't want to go back there.

disturbed1 12-15-2010 01:37 PM

Revenge of the Titans is dual ARCH - it's a java application. Machinarium's site states 32bit Linux. Not too sure about the others. It's not even clear from the other's sites if there's a native Linux version. I do recall reading about the native Linux versions on various gaming sites. Wish the actual game site would advertise/promote the Linux version too.

From the little youtube video included on the bundle site, it seems that a lot of the games have had their Linux versions developed specifically for this bundle. The narrator says things like "Making its debut on the Linux platform" and such.

disturbed1 12-15-2010 07:35 PM

Thanks D1ver!
I just showed my Girlfriend the trailers for all of the games. We'll be participating this time, missed out on the last one.

Cortex Command, Osmos and Revenge of the Titans have 64-bit binaries. Machinarium is a Flash game, so you can just extract the SWF file and play it in a 64-bit Flash player running in a 64-bit browser.

So, every game except Braid can be run 64-bit native.

fbsduser 12-15-2010 09:53 PM

Amnesia and all three of the penumbra games.

dugan 12-22-2010 11:09 AM

If you don't have the first Humble Bundle, then BUY THE SECOND ONE NOW and pay more than $7.39 USD. You'll get the first one free.

Details are at the Humble Bundle homepage.

I purchased part2 before the time extension for $20. Just read the email about the added games. Left me speechless. Here's a shot of the games added to the download screen ( Braid and Cortex Command are cut off).

D1ver 12-22-2010 08:01 PM

Its a hell of a deal for 20 bucks..

disturbed1 12-22-2010 08:30 PM

Still haven't played them. I already own Penumbra, and played beta demos for Revenge of the Titans (own Puppy Game's other titles), Aquaria, and Lagaru. Been addicted to Bullet Candy Perfect lately.

Cultist 12-23-2010 10:12 PM

Wow, Amnesia looks great. I just ordered it and about to download. Always on the lookout for good linux-native games

Thanks for bringing Bullet Candy Perfect to my attention. At $2 for that game and another, I can't resist.

disturbed1 12-24-2010 07:48 PM

I ordered the 3 game deal from Charlie. Bullet Candy Perfect, Irukandji, and the yet to be released Scoregasm. Be sure to check out Space Phallus <NSFW!!!> :D

Another lesser known shooter game is AstroMenace. http://www.viewizard.com/astromenace/index_linux.php Even though it's free for Linux, I still forwarded the amount of the Windows version. Source code is available as well.

Not bad at all.

i got myself humble bundle 2 this xmas, paid £15. Bargain!
http://www.humblebundle.com/

D1ver 12-26-2010 04:43 PM

Does it make anyone else to proud to see the payment breakdown for the humble bundle?

Linux share ~= to Mac share, and Linux users are on average parting with twice the money of both Windows and Mac users. So much for that "Linux users wont pay for proprietary software" bs..

Agreed, i used to be very naughty while using WinOS. Now, after years of using linux, i realise exactly how much effort goes into any good software and should be rewarded.

dugan 12-02-2011 09:50 PM

*BUMP!

It is, after all, the holiday season again.

Oil Rush is my first holiday season purchase.

Project Zomboid would likely be added to my CC statement next. Further purchases will be informed by which Linux games do well in the indiedb competition.

disturbed1 12-02-2011 10:12 PM

I bought Dungeons of Dredmor already, and will purchase the Introversion HIB. 3 days left, better hurry :)

H_TeXMeX_H 12-03-2011 06:05 AM

I bought Oil Rush. I will say more on it when they finish it.

disturbed1 12-05-2011 12:07 AM

Finally purchased the Introversion Bundle.
I should probably start using Desura a little more. I've been launching my games the traditional way. Desura has the ability to add links to already installed games - which I need to take advantage of.
Right now, I have more games than I do time. Unless something spectacular comes out, I'm done for awhile*. We purchased HIB #1 (World of Goo, Aquaria, Gish, Penumbra:Overture, Lugaru, Samorost 2), #2 (Braid, Cortex Command, Machinarium, Osmos, Revenge of the Titans), The Frozenbyte Bundle (Trine, Shadowgrounds, and Shadowgrounds Survivor), but passed on the others.

We also purchased the bundle deals from Charlie's Games, Puppy Games, and the Penumbra collection. Pre-ordered Oil Rush, purchased Family Farm and Dungeons of Dredmor as soon as they were available. Along with Neverwinter Nights, UT:2004, ET:Quake Wars, a few I'm forgetting - we have plenty of commercial games - not to mention the slew of open source games out there.

*Not actually ;) There are some Runesoft Games I've been itching to play. If LGP ever finishes Bandits, or when/if Nemesys ports their games to Linux.

dugan 12-05-2011 08:31 AM

For my part, I picked up the id Software Super Pack when it was half-price a couple of weeks ago. Stretching the definition of "native Linux games", I guess, but you can get native ports for many of those games directly from id Software.

disturbed1, I should bookmark your post and bring it up every time someone says "but Linux has no games!" Linux has more high-quality commercial games than anyone can play. And that's not counting things like Exult (the Ultima 7 player), DosBox, ScummVM, Wine, source ports (like eduke32 and prboom), etc.

Incidentally, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars has just been delisted on Steam, for some reason.

dugan 12-07-2011 08:55 AM

* BUMP

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is listed as being on "final clearance" at Future Shop. So I'm picking it up.

rizzy 12-09-2011 01:57 PM

Still holding some hope for Rage linux client, even though the game was panned by reviews I'd buy a linux version as soon as it's out. A bit like ET:QuakeWars: the game could be used as a good testing and benchmarking tool - CPU/GPU demanding, using relatively new graphics engine. Not that ET:QW is a bad game, I just couldn't get into it - heavy focus on online team play is not my cup of tea. Small but dedicated community with only few servers that are always populated exists, saying that, I never had a problem finding a game with good ping. By any margin, ETQW is fared far better in the long run than say Prey or Quake4 did.
This Xmas, sadly, all my new games are on windows steam install: Portal2, FarCry1, Empire:Total War.

I've never used Steam, but I have looked at it, and I can't find any info that suggests I can get linux games from it. Which is a shame because Hammerfight looks like fun and I missed it on humblebundle

Hammerfight is in the current HIB as an added bonus.

Steam mostly works, most of the time with most versions of Wine with some games. I installed Steam a while ago just to play a single game - Torchlight. Once I beat the game, and wore out it's replay value, haven't found the need to use Steam again.

---edit---
Great, now I'm thinking about playing Torchlight again :p

That rules, it wasn't in there when I purchased it, they must have just added it.

disturbed1 12-24-2011 03:51 AM

Hammerfight wasn't included at first. Like the other HIB's, if you match/exceed the average payment you get the bonus games.

I did finally purchase HIB4, but I haven't even played the Introversion games yet. Accidentally clicked on Edge World in G+.

IMO Linux needs causal games. Something like Big Fish Games, or the now defunct Reflexive Games. Even though most of these games all work 100% in wine, it would be nice if Desura (or someone else) could work with the devs of these games. There are possibly millions of titles all at a reasonable price. Between the 3 of us (Self, Girlfriend, Roommate) we've spent $1,000's and far too many hours playing titles like Plants Vs. Zombies, Alice Green Fingers, Farm Frenzy, Garden Defense, Cake Mania ...

I know PopCap ported some of their games to Mac - means OpenGL. Plus there is a port of the PopCap Games Framework

I had already spent more than the average, but hammerfight still wasn't available as a bonus back then (I bought it the day it came out).

also, how come so many of your games are garden related?

We like our veggies :D

Never noticed that before, but it's true. My Girlfriend, and our Roommate love those farm games. Personally, I think they're a little boring and tedious. Plants vs. Zombies is a different story though.

dugan 12-25-2012 12:37 AM

I forgot I already had Spirits from a Humble Bundle and bought it again from its homepage :).

It wasn't a total loss; I did get with it an unadvertised 73.6mb artbook in PDF format, which was not included with the Humble Bundle release and doesn't appear to be included with the Desura version either.

dugan 01-02-2013 11:11 PM

It's late, but the Steam Holiday sale is still on (and will be until the 5th). I broke down and bought The Book of Unwritten Tales and its sequel on Linux Steam.

Defender's Quest got taken off my to-buy list after I found out it was a Flash game.
