Perhaps if all hell broke out in a furious whirlwind which would send a dagger in the heart of CEO/head guy of EA Sports, I would love for them to resurrect the PC Madden series and port it to Linux. Sigh...the possibility of that happening is so frighteningly low I dare to venture it may happen when pigs invent electronic wings for them selves and begin to fly...
1. Maybe we pick a commercial port (or few) already made?
2. agree upon it (which one)
3. make a massive move buying it off the market ("vote by money")
4. Prove this thread a hit (or a miss) once and for all
5. Send a strong (or not ) message to the Gaming industry
How about that?
(boy I hope lot of people get this proposal)

I like this idea, but the only "commercial" game I've ever seen that comes with a native Linux installer is Unreal Tournament, and I think even the newer versions of that don't have it on the disc you have to go to a website and download some extra files. Also, just buying the game wouldn't really do much unless we all made it known WHY we were all buying the game. Are there games out there with native Linux installers that I'm not aware of?
I am not much of a gamer but my daughter and I occasionally I enjoy some of the old arcade classics like asteroids and variants like maelstrom, and some older Dos scrolling games like Jill of the Jungle. Jill runs fine in a "Dos Box", but only about 6 X 6 inches. go to full screen and poof, dead in the water. Folks at dos box forum no solutiuon so far. tried several other dos emulators but dos box is the only one so far that will work for Jill. Problem is with modern high res LCD of 1920 X 1080 like I have, the window is only 6 inches wide and no way to make it larger or full screen. This is true for many other older games. Maelstrom being the most disappointing as it is just such an outstanding improvement of the classic Asteroids.
The follow games would be nice to start:
Roller Coaster Tycoon 2/3
EA Sports NHL
Diner Dash
Fate
ToCA Race Driver
18 Wheels of Steel
These are the kind of games I would prefer to see ported and I would definitely buy if they were.
However at this point I would love to see any games ported to Linux.
One problem, most are shooter or RPG's. I don't like either and I'm not buying a game that I'll never play.
Just bought Penumbra collection, kind of a survival horror without as many action elements (less fighting more creeping around scared out of your witts), it's a really good game so far, I'm still working on the 1st one, Overture. It has a native client for Windows, Linux, and MAC, and even though I'm running it on a 64 bit system (it's 32 bit) I had no dependency issues with it. Just install and go, :-)
Just saw this on the website for Penumbra. Recently they had a "Humble Indie Bundle" thing where you pay what you want for all 5 games, and the proceeds went to charity. All the games are going open source and have native Linux, MAC and Windows clients. Too bad I didn't know about it until today and it's over, but I was looking around and found this neat little graphic that shows that the average Linux user donated more money than the average Windows/MAC user, and that we actually beat MAC for amount of money donated. I put the graphic on my dropbox in case they take it down. Screenie
Games I would like to play natively on Linux, offhand:
Classic Maxis games such as SimEarth, SimLife, SimAnt, SimCity, SimCity 2000, SimTower, SimTown, The Sims 1 & 2,
Classic Blizzard games like WarCraft II (I will check out Stratagus), StarCraft and/or Brood War (and hopefully the new StarCraft too)
Some of the old Sierra games: CounterStrike, Quest for Glory 5
and also, if possible some of Ambrosia Software's stuff, i.e. any of the Escape Velocity series and Apeiron.
and yes, Roller Coaster Tycoon.
