Question Warcraft III: TFT NoCD with Wine

Hello,

I'm running into some trouble getting Wine to work with the NoCD crack for WC3: TFT, I've used several different NoCD versions, but for some reason none will work. I used the fresh-install 1.07 No CD, but it didn't work. I applied the 1.17a patch, went and grabbed the NoCD for it, still didn't work.

I've looked around on this forum, looked at all the threads for setting WC3: TFT up through Wine, nothing worked. Been to WineHQ, Wine Wiki, and even google, so far nothing I've read has worked.

I heard somewhere that the NoCD doesn't work with v2.6 kernels, is that true? I don't particularly want to recompile my kernel, but I will if I have to.

Using Wine 20041019 and Gentoo on a 2.6.10-r6 kernel.

Any feedback on why the NoCD isn't working, or if there are work-arounds would be much appreciated.

Ok well I to have WC3 TFT......however, theres no current NoCD fix, the last version I found was for 1.14 or something... Which means:

When you connect to BNet it automaticly updates your copy of WC3...it overwrites the current "crack" you have installed with the updated content.

Unless you acctually update your copy first, then crack it you'll never have success. But like I said I don't think theres a current 1.17a crack out there for it.

Ehh...? I have a 1.17a NoCD cracked exe, but it doesn't work. I patched it BEFORE I applied the crack also. I couldn't get it to use the crack even with a fresh-install with the default version (1.07) and the crack for 1.07, it kept asking for the CD. You can get the 1.17a crack from gamecopyworld or megagames.

ah ya your right... I was looking at the ROC cracks.. But either way around I know what the problem is with it.

I'm guessing you need to enable legacy on your machine.

The fix is simple, try this it should reslove the CD issue.

[root@localhost]# echo 1 > /proc/sys/vm/legacy_va_layout

before running WC3 (this is required after every boot).
To enable legacy VA Layout at boot time, edit /etc/sysctl.conf
and add the following:
vm.legacy_va_layout = 1

You may also want to try to disable exec-shield you can either use the boot time option
"exec-shield=0" or it may be changed, before running WC3, by typing either:

[root@localhost]# echo 0 > /proc/sys/kernel/exec-shield

or

sysctl -w kernel.exec-shield=0

Hope this information is helpful! It fixed problems on my end.

Well, I did the first part by turning on legacy.

But the second part, I don't have exec-shield, is there something I need to compile to get it? I've never heard of exec-shield... So I have no idea.

Thanks for the fast responses by the way

Well I wasn't exactly sure what distro your running so I added that in. Thats been a pretty good fix for a few games with Fedora Core.

Have you tried compiling WineX ?

Give me your sytem info and I'll do some hunting.

Sorry about the late reply, I've been busy as of late.

Anyway, my specs are: Gentoo on 2.6.10-r6 kernel, AMD XP 2600+, ATi Radeon 9200 SE, Wireless Belkin FD6001 v1, if you need any more specs just say so, that SHOULD be everything you need to know.

And no, I have not tried to compile WineX, I'll give that a try tomorrow night.

Fedora Core 2-3 have issues....just follow the steps in that link and you should be good to go.

Also if you want to play WC3 via Wine rather than Cedega/P2P (new names for WineX) check this link out.. He has everything you need to get it going.

Or WC3 TFT
