Vega Strike not starting up due to ALSA errors

Hi folks.

I've recently downloaded and installed Vega Strike on Mandrake 10.1. I installed the following rpms:

vegastrike-0.4.1-2mdk
vegastrike-data-0.4.1-1mdk
vegastrike-data-music-0.3.1-1mdk

they were got from:

ftp.free.fr/pub/Distributions_Linux/Mandrakelinux/devel/10.1/i586/media/main

The installation process was ok, a link was created in the menu tree under the games category. However clicking this link has no efect. It seems to start up, but then do nothing.

After further investigation, i found an executable named /usr/games/vslauncher, when i run it from the console, a window pops up, and now i'm able to select a mission, i click on the 'new game' button and then get this output on the console:

WARNING: no var named DopplerScale in section audio using default: 1
open /dev/[sound/]dsp: Device or resource busy
ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:1155snd_pcm_hw_open) open /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p failed: Device or resource busy
ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:1155snd_pcm_hw_open) open /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p failed: Device or resource busy
free(): invalid pointer 0x8e7ada0!
Segmentation fault

I'm not running anything that could be using the sound device, when i run "modinfo soundcore" I get this:

filename: /lib/modules/2.6.8.1-10mdk/kernel/sound/soundcore.ko.gz
description: Core sound module
author: Alan Cox
license: GPL
alias: char-major-14-*
vermagic: 2.6.8.1-10mdk 686 gcc-3.4
depends:

Other games I installed (foobillard and tux racer), work ok. I think alsa is running fine, tho i don't know how to find out for certain.

any hint will be appreciated, i'm looking forward for a game of this kind.

Regards.

I had the same problem on Mandrake 10.1, seems to be a clash between arts and ALSA.

Not a fix, but I upgraded to 2005, set ALSA in the KDE control panel and it works fantastic. Had to disable ALSA on boot, but KDE starts it up.

Also gave me the new version of Vegastrike, which is excellent.

Regards
Richard
