Ut2k4 & Voip

i'm having trouble getting the Voice-chat facility in Unreal Tournament 2004 working.

In-game sounds and music work okay so there's nothing amiss there. i've set the Voice Chat volume to max and turned everything else down. i've found a couple of online pages that mention creating a ~/.openalrc file which i've tried, again without success.

i suppose there's the chance that simply no one's chatting which would account for the silence but is there any way to test this?
