UT2003 - No sound
 

I have searched the web but to no avail on how to fix this. I have alsa installed (1.0) and all of my other games work and sound fine. I am using a SB live sound card. I have also installed openAL in hopes that it might work. Again, it didn't. I need to play UT2003. Can someone help, as i don't even know what the problem is or where to start.:jawa: :Pengy:

When you run it from a terminal, what error does it give you ?

I figured out what was wrong, but i still don't know how to fix it. When i install UT2003 out of the box, everything is fine, but as soon as i patch it to the latest, the sound fails. Oh well, i'll play it without the patch but with really bad download speeds.

Hey, i had this problem!!! Right, how i solved it....copy all the patched files into the relevent dirs in the ut2003 root, BUT do *NOT* copy the 2 files that are to do with audio which are called.......(be back in a min)

openal.so and ALAudio.so (in the system dir) don't update these files or else the sound just won't work. I learnt this the hard way - i must have reinstalled ut2003 around 12 times and trying different things, then i thought about it and tried it this way and it worked!

Nope, after doing that the game won't start at all. So i replaced the 2 files that i left out when i was doing the upgrade and now i have to reinstall because i have no sound again. :-(

Thought it would work because it sounded just like the problem that i had.
When you re-install, copy the ut2003 (and everything in it) to your home dir as a backup, then you can fiddle around with it trying to get it working, then if you mess it up you can replace it back and it will restore it, this is what i did.

I've never installed or played UT2003 but I've jut read a thread of some guy having problems with an ALSA driver or so and another told him that whenever he played UT2003 and had his aRTs server on (or something like that) sound just wouldn't play... I don't know if it your case but what the f*** give it a try!

Multiple sound devices?
 

I had this problem until I realized that SuSE had activated both my sound devices - the one on the board and my SB Live! as well. Since I only use the Live! I deleted the onboard device (in my case I used YaST as I run SuSE) and sound in UT2003 started working. This was a bit confusing since even with both cards active I was able to play a cd, until I realized that the cdrom is connected directly to the Live! card. That would explain why I could play CD's, but had no sound in UT2003!

No, the game works fine until i install the new patch for linux. Then the sound goes. It doesn't have anything to do with conflicting sound cards =). I don't think in my case anyway. But i found that installing the required software for Ogle to run my dvd's does something. I think if i do it in a certain order, UT2003's sound starts to work again. It might be the A52dec lib.....not sure.

I upgraded and got the same.
I'm on FC3, x86 distro.
It worked just fine until I upgraded (and I'm a noob really so most of what you are all discussing is over my head, but I'm getting the general gist).

I found after much trolling around that you have to install SMPEG libraries to get this to work - and then it works perfectly.

Then just untar the archive (I didn't bother with the RPMs myself) and compile them ("./compile", then "make all".

After that, it just worked... Took a long time to find but now it just rock. I tell you, UT2003 on Linux kicks the stink out of XPs performance. TI think there's just too much extraneous stuff going on on XP to make it look and act clever. And KDE (and Gnome) on Linux just seem to handle thier snazzy stuff without even getting a sweat.
