Cool Super Tux Kart Not Starting

When i run super tux kart from terminal it says: jamie@jamie-desktop:/usr/games$ supertuxkart
Data files will be fetched from: '/usr/share/games/supertuxkart/'
Config file '/home/jamie/.supertuxkart/config' does not exist, it will be created.
Highscores will be saved in '/home/jamie/.supertuxkart/highscore.data'.
FATAL: ssgInit called without a valid OpenGL context.
jamie@jamie-desktop:/usr/games$ can you change the colour depth in ubuntu or something i am running Ubuntu release 8.04 (hardy)

Well, it seems to be a very common bug, it's even listed in the SuperTuxKart FAQ... There are many bug reports and various suggestions floating around...
What is your Default Depth settings in /etc/X11/xorg.conf? If it's 16, change it to 24 and try again. What's your videocard? what driver do you use? Do you have OpenGL support for it (run the glxinfo command to find out)? Did you compile the program yourself?
With the number of bug reports posted, your best bet would probably be to wait for a new version...

Post the output of glxinfo | grep direct. Did you install drivers for your card?
