Struggling to get wine working!

I'm trying to install an old favourite - Emperor Rise of the Middle Kingdom. I tried following various guides to install wine, I've got wine 5.0 and I think I've got gecko.

I've downloaded an .exe of the game, from this page:
https://www.dotslashplay.it/en/games/emperor

but struggling to follow those instructions, and when I try to just double click the .exe I can't find wine on the application list to open it, etc.

Tried installing wine 6.0 but not much luck with that either... I'm using lubuntu 20.04 but I keep getting what appear to be errors with the focal titles.

Any help would be appreciated - currently laid up in hospital and feel it's the perfect time to get nostalgic building roads and granaries

I also tried using the forum search but it seems that's a skill unto itself!

@ duckwobble :-

You may find this useful:-

https://github.com/ferion11/Wine_Appimage

It's a fully self-contained WINE build, packed as an AppImage. You'll need to uninstall everything you've already installed.....others here can help with that, if necessary. (I run Puppy Linux, and Puppy doesn't use all the "sudo" and "apt-get" stuff of mainstream distros, so I'm not sure of the necessary commands).

The instructions are all there. The link for the releases is listed over in the right-hand column. v5.11 is not the very newest version, though fairly new......but this is the simplest way I've ever encountered for installing/configuring WINE on a Linux system.

Mike.

The github initially scrambled my brain, but when I did go to have a try the download link was a 404.

I've tried all sorts now.... even minigalaxy for gog games.

Open a terminal: <ctrl><alt>t
Then change directories to where ever the file is: cd <directory>
Then: wine <filename>
(file names are case-sensitive; be sure you include the '.exe')

You could also try running it with Proton.
