Savage - problems maybe?

I got the full version of Savage: Battle for newearth.
(i bought it online) :)

In XP the editor comes up with an average fps on 35
(GeForce 2 with 32 meg ram, 1700 Athlon XP and 1,5 gig of ram)
Pretty nicce and the game is great.

So Linux, Debian (latest drivers etc... )
The editor sits there with an FPS on a measly 15
Didn't get the time to test the game under linux itself. but there was something lacking in the fps department.

Does anyone have any tips for getting better FPS?

And how the *hark the angels* do i find out what port games use to play online, so i can open them for connections?

*is reading like hell to take the ComPTIA A+ certification*

I know that linuxgames.com has a link for a savage demo, but i have yet to test it out.

If you are running somthign like wine, it will show lower FPS but when i used to play counterstrike alot, it as actually fastter, just the fps showed lower for some reason.

that is just peronal experience.

Never let the sad fps of an editor fool you.

Savage runs better on my linux part, than under winXP.
(spec, 1,4ghz amd, 1.5 gig ram, Gaforce2 + 32 meg ram)
Then i'm runing it n 1024x768 :)

Cheers :)

I haven't checked fps but I get FAR better pings under Linux playing Team Fortress than I ever got under Windows. In Windows, (and in my best guesstamation), I pinged around 65-140 range. Under Linux, it's around 35- 110. Anybody else do TF as a Linux client?

Also, I downloaded and installed the Savage Linux demo. It looks pretty cool. I only spectated for about 10 or so minutes, but it looked to me like sort of a first person shooter version of Starcraft. Guys were running around building structures and collecting gold and jewells and slaughtering these two legged grass eaters, I suppose for some sort of team credit..

Kroppus 10-21-2003 05:50 AM

The creatures are slaughtered for your own gain, so that you can buy better equipment,

I've given up CS and the games from Valve. I can't get them to work under Linux at all, so since there's games like UT, UT2k3, Savage, Diablo2 and Red Alert2 that works under Linux. I'm happy

Fotgot one thing. Even most of my native Windows games rns better under WineX on then on my XP..

:)

Kroppus, you've got me curious. What problems have you run into running CS/H-L/TF etc. under Winex?

Kroppus 10-21-2003 11:19 AM

So far i've had: No sound (error in something with the sound modules) I got the retail version of CS btw. The meny screen are all garbled up and most of the time it's really hard to hit any buttons with the mouse (no reaction when clicking). And the few times i've been able to get it up and running (after frantic clicking) it starts fine until you try to move. No reaction.
So far i haven't been able to get it to go online and that's just as well. I don't want to be known as "Sitting Duck" either. :)
From XP it works ok. Better than HL at least. :)

I've found out that i have some problems with SDL last night. Trying to get Majesty to work. But i don't think that's the main reason. Since other games works ok. Even GTA3 works fine. *going to try it out a bit more later tonight*

Well, the FPS in savage also depends on your connection to the internet. If you are playing online. You can try just hosting your own game, (closest thing to single player you can get), and checking the fps again. I use Arch linux as my distro of choice and my system specs are 2500+@2600mhz, 1gig ram, GFFX 5800.
At 1280x1024 in savage I max my fps counter while hosting a game on my own, (single player). When I am online ( I have an ISDN 128k connection) I need to drop my res down to 800x600 for playable framerates.
This leads me to believe the connection has something to do with the fps ingame. So if you have a BB connection and your pings are good, something else is awry.
S2games is still working on some bugs to my knowledge so things me get better for you and for me later on.

I also don't know if that will make a difference or not, but Arch is i686 and I am not for sure about Debian. Like I said I have no idea if this makes a difference but thought I would mention it.

Oh, one big thing that helps performance that I noticed it turn off the grass or turn it to the lowest setting. That seemed to help the most for me when playing online.

Kroppus 10-22-2003 07:04 AM

I go adsl through lan here, so the ping ain't a problem. *smiles*
I don't play new games in higr res than 800x600 on my xp part 'cause of the thing named XP. :)
But here debian i'm usualy in 1024x768 and games runs better.
XP is that short for Xtra Power needed?
*thought it was Xtra Problems*

Then again. *sighs*
Some games works great online and others won't. Enemy Territory refuses to go oline. And i haven't had much time to check it out lately. After spending most of the day fixing Winblows computers, it's good to watch tv when get home late at night.

MNKyDeth 10-22-2003 10:40 AM

Actually your performance is lacking in your vid card overall, your cpu is actually prolly waiting for your vif card to finish rendering frames before it sends new info to the vid card. Most GF2mx cards a maxed performance wise around 1.3ghz. A GF3 is maxed around 1.8ghz and gf4 ti are maxed around 2.2- 2.3ghz. GF4 mx's are just little overpwered gf2 counterparts so they max out around 1.4ghz.

But I don't think that is the problem overall as you say you get better performance in winstuff.

Do you have your vid card set to performance in the settings under winstuff? If you do that is most likely why there is the difference. If you check the readme file on nvidia's site you can change the options in linux so they resemble the winstuff settings.
Also, in winstuff are you running 16bit color depth? If you are and you are running 24bit color depth in linux even though in the game it says 1024x768x16 you are still running 24bit color depth because linux does not change the color depth on the fly like winstuff. GF2mx cards don't seem to perform as well under 32bit or 24bit color modes, becuase of the lack of ram on the cards.

Hope this was informational atleast.

Some games works flawlessly under win and other under linux.
The problem with Half-Life and CS is that now matter what i do of tweaking the gameplay is totally screwed up.
Like jumping. Not much fun when you sometimes even can't get up stairs 'cause you can't jump high enough. And YEPPS it's really buggy.
Just for an attempt i installed Half-Life here yesterday and the same problems came + laggy gameplay in 800x600 (UT2K3 runs great in 1024x786)

The color depth is set to 32 bit's 'cause i mainly use the win part for graphics and 3d modelling. When i'm not gaming that is. :)

I wonder what the problem could be. I have none of those problems at all. Except for the menu rolling thing, Half-Life, Team Fortress, Blue Shift and Opposing Force all run perfectly for me under Winex3. Other games I've gotten to run perfectly are Trespasser and Gunman Chronicles. Starcraft lags some, but not enough to make it too irritating...

Kroppus 10-26-2003 01:25 PM

I don't know either.. I havent tried HL and the addons under linux, 'cause ii think there's better games to play anyway.
What i really hated about HL was that you couldn't skip the in-between movies.
Ok the first time, the third time it was really bad. :)

My Nvidia card works great so that's not the problem.
Anyway. There's a lot of games to try out anyway :)

Oh yeah? What on earth could better than riding rail cars while blowing away head crabs with a 12 gauge? ;)

I think there are some console commands to skip the movie..

Have you tried out Trespasser? It works very well with Winex3. :)

Kroppus 10-27-2003 09:48 AM

Nope.. I have to admit that i haven't even heard of Trespasser.
What kind of game is that?

Halflife was ok now and then and then again when you can't even jump up so that you can get further in the game without digging out cheats to get past those points?
