Quake3--winex--errors and probs need help

i recently got a copy of Transgaming's winex and started out like this:

console: winex3 -bigexe demo32.exe......this ran the splash screen or the autostart screen. i press install. It begins to install, succesfully completes after a few bone jaring seconds of lockups. i put a shortcut on the desktop. i press it, "couldnt load default config". so i go back and stick to what works "winex demo32.exe" loads splash screen, and i press play. IT PLAYS! with a small hitch: Its slow going through the start up then when it gets to the menu screen, everything is everywhere.....i cant c crap. i press up and enter and left arrow, enter, enter to get out of there. the console reads...."//# winex3 /mnt/cdrom/demo32.exe
...//# Xlib: extension 'XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0'.
mmtime pid=1751 tid=1751....

whats going on? something seems to be missing, i look at my mandrake cds and i cant find XF86DRI or whatever. cant find the basic files for quake3 either :\! anyone seen this before?

toshiba satellite 2805 s202 .dvdrom/700mghz p3/128megs and a 10 gig HD

someone help a desperate quaker who likes LINUX!

Well quake3 has a direct port to Linux. You do not need Wine or WineX to run quake3 in linux.
Search on google on how to copy your windows files to linux from either the Quake 3 cd or a hard drive. All you need to do after you copy the necessary files from cd is to download the latest quake3 point release from ID Software.
ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/quake3/linux/
1.32b is the latest.

Hope this helps.
The error you are gettin from winex appears to be a display problem with DRI, Do you have an nvidia based video card or ati? I'm guessing ati, by the error message. Post some specs as far as type of video card etc.

also

also, you need to give wine access to the drive that holds the files you're going to use

something like

/mnt/windows
drive = d:

in ~/.wine/config

- copy thier example and beware - you're giving windows access (and virii, etc) to linux

The problem is actually more likely related to the S3 Savage graphics chipset and its extreme lack of processing power with relation to quake3.

The default.cfg problem is because the files are installed to the wrong directory by default (dont ask why). If i remember correctly you will find them in /usr/games/quake3 and they need to be in /usr/local/games/quake3 . Beyond that, it may be a permissions thing.

Dont use winex version, use the native version it should be less hassle.

For the Linux q3a demo version.
ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/qua...11-6.x86.gz.sh

For the Patch to 1.32b and install.
ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/qua....32b-3.x86.run

I doubt it will run very quickly, so try and reduce the size, to at least 640x480, smaller if you can get it down to 512x384.
