quake3 crosshair issue

im hopin someone will be able to shed some light on this for me...

i was on the 2.4.20-8 vanilla rh9 kernel a while back. i was playing quake3 and all of its various mods with wonderful success and was having a grand ol time.

however, now i have moved my sorry butt on over to 2.6.2.
after a minor nightmare wrestling with my machine to get it running, i finally have things moving along fairly nicely.

except for the one thing i do that accounts for about 80% of my computer time.

gaming.

i ended up having to disable ALSA when i am playing q3, because otherwise i get no sounds. the workarounds i have found just lock up q3 as soon as i enter an arena

so i can fall back to OSS, no problem.

however, when i am playing now, i have a slightly different problem.

#1. if i am playing rocket arena 3, the crosshair does not get drawn at all! it is just the empy box, like the placeholder for the crosshair. i can change the size of it and everything, but no crosshair. just a silly gray box.
anyone with any thoughts on why this might be? very very annoying, because i did not have this problem before.
i even went so far as to do a fresh install of everything, and i am still experiencing the problem

#2. when i am using some other mods, like urban terror, i find that even though i may have a map, as soon as i join any servers, it immediately starts trying to dl the map. even when the darn thing is sitting right in my directory! this was never a problem before at all, and has only cropped up recently.
again, a fresh install has not produced a solution to the problem

anyone with any helpful ideas, i would greatly appreciate any feedback!

#1 was solved by re-installing both quake3 and the mod in question...

#2 is still an issue, and is keeping me from playing urban terror dangit!!! if anyone has any bright ideas?
