Well, this isn't really a problem but does Quake III usually freeze for 1 second. Sometimes I jump around the map, and my character freezes for a second then it fixes itself and I keep playing.

Anybody get that, too?

Might be a ram problem, how much ram do u have mate ? could be that its just taking a second to refresh the ram, try turning the graphic level down and see if the problem persists.

if memory serves right FC2 uses XFree86 graphics server. as far as i know mate that server is a bit out of date these days, Xorg is the best thing in. im not sure but the quake3 problem you are having might be solved if u used Xorg instead of Xfree86. plus remember, FC2 may have all u need, FC4 will have mostly the same packages. the main difference in Fedora is that each new release has some performance updates. for example FC4 boots up and loads programs twice as fast as compared to FC3 and no idea how many times faster than FC2 so pardon my saying again but you should take a closer look at what more u can get with a newer version. for me, not updating my linux distro atleast once in a year makes linux feel more like M$ windows

hi WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot i'm glad to hear you have been in india, i'm in chennai(TamilNadu). to me the real problem is i feel my system is not fully supported by fc4 and the smp kernel is chosen as default during installation as my processor is hyper threading enabled, and i could not install the latest drivers posted on source forge dri project as i could not get get any support from intel for linux os. i think fc5 should fix it all. its really cool to chat with indian linux users, if you have any tips on tweaking fedora pls mail me on dgopi81@yahoo.co.in or post it here. bye bye keep in touch.

with regards
gopi

Hey Gopi,
just to clear it up, im born and brought up in India, just moved around a bit cos dad's in the army ( lived everywhere, from Srinagar to Melbourne , Australia ) and ive just been in Canada for 2 yrs now. ( i got worried when u said chennai(Tamil Nadu), im sure most pune-ites know where chennai is
Back to ur question, u need to tell me what graphic card you have. If it is ATI or Nvidia, dont go for FC5 yet, theres a bug in its kernal that prevents modules from compiling using the kernal-source so u wont be able to install ur drivers on it. FC4 is an awsome distro mate and has a lot of potential still, if u dont believe me, check out what my desktop looks like :

i'm sorry if i'd embarassed you. comming to the problem i have no additional video cards as i'm happy with the on board Grapics Media Accelerator 900 the 915GAV chipset has and the overall performance of video and audio is exceptionally good while running the system on windows XP, but i'll go for nvidia when my on board video cudn't support the latest games. actually i tried installing Red Hat 9 linux but it didn't detect my sata hard disk so i tried fedora core 4. i'm really moved by its performance and functionality so i want to make it work perfectly in my system. the issue in my video card is the xserver has assigned i810 drivers for my 915 graphics card so the functionality of the graphics card seems to be reduced as could not change the color depth to 32bits and the videoram could not be increased more than 64mb. the system is a marvel running windows xp and i had played doom3 and quake 3 with the same setup and the quality is excellent, but doom3 on linux looked like running on a cheap video card. i'm really set back and posted this issue on lq http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d.php?t=423727. i really want fedora on my system so i had to choose to upgrade to fc5 to fix the driver compatiblity problems.
