Here's my specs:
OpenSuse 10.2 64bit
Intel Core 2 Duo 6420
Nvidia Geforce 8800 GTX
MSI P35 Neo

I already installed the nvidia drivers and the nvidia control panel seems to think everything is good. Anyone know what the problem is?

Anyone know what the problem is?
Looks like that Quake4 installation is NOT intended for a 64bits environment. Check if there is a 64bits installer for linux, though I'm not sure if such thing exists yet.

Well yea but x86_64 can still run 32bit programs. Firefox isn't 64bit and it runs. Part of folding@home is 32 bit and it runs. OpenSuse even provides libraries to get 32 bit programs to run. Before I got that error, it was telling me it couldn't find libSDL. I looked and I only had the 64bit version installed so I installed the 32bit one and that got it working.

It's the same as Windows 64bit.. you can still run 32 bit programs just fine including Quake 4. My guess right now is that there's some library that I need to install in 32 bit but I'm really not sure.

hehe, no it's not "the same as Windows 64bit".

Though your guess is right, according to those error messages, looks like the missing 32 bits library is the nvidia driver (look for libGL.so.1, should be a link to the nvidia library).

As the Quake4 installation is NOT intended for a 64 bits environment, it is most unlikely to work this way. And running 32 bits resources on a 64 bits OS always implies an emulation layer (be it on hardware or software), which makes it slower than running just a 32 bits environment.

There has to be a way to fix it... I mean they make nvidia 64bit drivers for a reason right? Quake 4 is about the newest game out for Linux.

I have exactly the same problem, and I'm running a 32Bit CPU.

Q3 worked fine. I guess the real problem is that the error message is quite UN-informative.

Well I ended up ditching OpenSuse for Fedora 7 and now Quake 4 runs just fine... I have no idea what the deal was with suse.

Games using the id Tech 4 (Doom 3) Engine have been giving me trouble. I installed them using the Shell Scripts on id Softwares Website, and copied the shareware pak file to the right directory (Did not have to with Quake 4). When I try to load it, it resizes the screen and closes. I managed to get a screenshot of what it says when I load it up with the Terminal.

Looks like there are a lot of graphic extensions unsupported on your system, some should be essencial and/or required for the game to run.

The last error line says: "ERROR: The current video card / driver combination does not support the necessary features."

I think it's pretty much clear that you need to upgrade your video driver, maybe get direct rendering working ... or perhaps get a newer videocard if your hardware is that outdated

First of all, I know my hardware can run Doom 3, becuase I have played it on Windows on my Computer. Secound, would upgrading to Fedora 7 help fix this?

OK, I figured out that the problem is that I dont have the Ati fglrx driver. My card is to old to use it though. So I am trying to wine it. But when I try it gives me this:

According to http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManage...rsion&iId=3745 The Doom3 demo does not work. If I cant WINE it, and I cant run the Native Linux version what can I do.

OH and sorry about the smiley faces in my terminal input. LQ put those in there.
