Quake 3

Hi all, I'm basically a semi-newb to linux. I'm going to install Quake 3 (have original linux q3 cd). I installed Mandrake 10.0 and i know i'm going to need the drivers to run my GeForce 4 Ti4600. Can someone point me to a direct link where I can download the drivers I need, I'm pretty sure I need the drivers as Mandrake 10.0 doesn't come pre-installed with drivers for your specific graphix adapter. I really want to get Quake 3 running, I've already downloaded the 1.32blinux patch ready to be installed. I would really appreciate the assistance. Thanks...

That should get you started.

I understand I need to exit X and run the installer. How do i exit X and boot to console?

As root got to /etc/ and look for inittab use an editor to edit it look for the line that says
Code:

id:5:initdefault
change the 5 to a 3 and reboot.

After you reboot you wont automatically start in X. You can still start X however, if you need to, by typing (after you are logged in) "startx" without the quotes. To install the NVIDIA driver, login as root, and goto the location of the driver (using the "cd" command), then type "sh NVIDIA" at this point press tab, and it should autofill. Now press enter and go through the installation. When it completes successfully, type "joe /etc/X11/XF86Config" (it may be XF86Config-4 or xorg.conf). Remove the lines under modules that are "glcore" and "dri", if one or two of those don't exists in the file, than don't worry. After you remove these two lines, you have to goto the video card selection and change the "Driver" from "nv" to "nvidia". Exit joe by pressing "Ctrl+K" + "X". Now you can start X by typing "startx" or "joe /etc/inittab" and change the 5 to a 3 then reboot

Hope that helps!

Or you could just login as root and type init 3 in a console and the X server will shutdown and you will be at a console prompt, that way you wont have to mess with the config files.

Yes, init 3 is the easy way. That way it will boot back into X when you restart...

I installed the nvidia drivers with the link that was given. I appreciate all your help guys by the way. Q3 is running so damn smooth, a lot smoother than windows. I'm starting to like linux more and more (once i get stuff workin:p) I'll post some more questions if i run into anymore problems, well actually, hmm... i have one now not related to quake3 but XMMS with Mandrake 10.0. Seems it didn't come with 10.0 for some reason. Anyways, I went to an ftp site and downloaded the file (xmms-1.2.10 to be exact) for XMMS. Extracted the file and now can't get past after running the ./configure command. States "configure: error: *** GLIB >= 1.2.2 not installed - please install first ***. I've tried many steps, I even download GLIB 1.2.2. The error is also stating "glib-config -- version' returned 1.2.2, but GLIB (1.2.10) was found! I don't understand why XMMS needs the older version, anyways if someone has a good answer to my mystery, give me a holla, thanks again for previous help!!!!

XMMS should come with mandrake 10. Came with mine :p

Anyway, if it doesn't you should get the mandrake rpm and install it that way. Search for it at rpmfind.net

There's plenty of posts around that will talk you through installing the rpm.

does anyone know of any LINUX QUAKE III namechangers, I can't seem to find one anywhere and does the q3config.cfg work the same way as windows???
