Thumbs up Promoting Planeshift: a free MMORPG for Linux!

Just want to get the word out there that there is a group of talented programmers hard at work developing a free MMORG for the Linux gaming community's enjoyment. Check it out at: http://www.planeshift.it/main_01.html The goal of this thread should be for the further discussion of Planeshift and other MMORGS for Linux

Can you list some of the obscure/wierd dependencies this game has. I remember I tried it a while ago, and I could never get it to run.

The game has gone through many stages in development so I cant list any kind of weird/ obscure dependencies you say the game has. However, it might be to your benefit to make a post of this question on one of the forums for Planeshift (General Discussion perhaps?) You can find them here: http://www.planeshift.it/community_forums.html
Chances are, you will probably get a very creditable answer from either a Planeshift programmer/ developer or a Routinier.

Cheers,

Gormless

I should also probably add that the game is still in the very early stages of development so its rough around the edges so to speak... Give it time....alot of time. Be patient with it. After all, its entirely volunteer work.

well, Planeshift in the screens look good, but it's been in development for years and nothing has happened. I think it will generate a lot of interest if they would get into a beta stage of development. The engine they are using (Crystal Space) is also a source of problems from what I've heard.

The website is pretty old stuff, from around the time of Molecular Blue, so dont trust it, hasnt been updated in a while. All the new postings and stuff about the game takes place in the Planeshift forums: http://www.planeshift3d.com/wbboard/main.php

So go there to find out more concerning the game and also the beta release (which they say should be in the near future) ...just dont quote me on that though..

Cheers,

Gormless

Well, sure.

Tibia isn't exactly a very good looking game, but it is a lot of fun. I particularly like that they have game worlds where PvP (player vs player) combat is disabled. I hate walking around, doing cool things, and then having my entire gaming session ruined because some fool decided it would be a good idea to kill me. Of course, those who prefer to walk on the wild side can always create a character on a PvP enabled server. Or, if you're one of the brutal types, you can join a "PvP Enforced" world were anything goes, and there literally are no consiquences for killing another player. (Or for bad spelling)

Like I said, it isn't a good looking game, but if you usually don't play an RPG for the graphics anyways, so I don't even care, really.

It's totally free, so you can try it out for nothing. Of course there are "premium features", but you'd be hard-pressed to find a free online service that didn't have a "premium" section or two.

The community isn't bad, either. I know any online forum has its fair share of idiots and asses, but I haven't run into anyone too bad yet, in-game or on the forum.

What else would you like to know?

UPDATE:
I feel a little stupid saying this, but I'm going to have to let you know that the Linux client for Tibia is a total piece. I hadn't actually tried to use it until today. I used to dual boot, WinXP for games, and Linux for everything else. My WindowsXP totally bombed today, so I just said "Screw it." and formated its partitions. I installed the Linux Tibia client and was appalled by its horribleness. (Not sure if that's a word.) It isn't even worth downloading.

The good news is that so long as you have a decent running machine, the Windows Client for Tibia works just fine under Wine.

The tibia windows client works just fine in wine and cedega. The issue I have with the game is that all the servers are usually to full to let free players play. You have to have a premium account to log onto servers after a certain number of players are in the game. I have no problem paying for a MMO, but I do have a problem paying for Tibia.
