PRBOOM - prboom.wad error

I have tried compiling PRBOOM from source (and actually got it to compile correctly) and installing from rpms (rpm.pbone.net - prboom and prboom-gl) but both installs give me the following error when I try to run prboom.

prboom v2.3.0 (htp://prboom.sourceforge.net/)
I_InitAxes : device 0 set to system mouse
I_InitAxes : axis module ready
C_Init: Init console.
default file: /home/jake/.prboom//prboom.config

W_Init: Init WADfiles.
adding /usr/share/games/doom/doom1.wad
W_AddFile: couldn't open prboom.wad

I have the shareware version of Doom placed in /usr/share/games/doom and it seems to find it correctly. It seems that it will not open prboom.wad ... why is this?

I am running Mandrake 10.0 official and prboom 2.3.0 with kernel 2.6.3-7

HELP please :-)

(legacy doom works great but I wanted to compare the two versions)

I had the same problem. Putting the prboom.wad file in my home directory and launching prboom from the same directory got it running.

FYI/IMHO, I found http://www.doomsdayhq.com/ was a much better engine.

HTH Mad.

THANKS!!!

I used the rpms for mandrake off of RPM PBONE (prboom and prboom-gl) and copied the /usr/share/games/doom/prboom.wad that it created to ~ and seems to work fine. I havent had time to compare the two but i heard that prboom had an AA option (anti-aliasing) and that would be COOL.

I am also going to try doomsday ( i like the idea of being able to try hexen and hertic. I never got around to playing them when they came out ). I couildnt find any rpms and i think i am having a minor problem with compiling. Thanks for the reply :-)
