Poker game that can teach me to play?

I'm looking for a poker game on linux (ubuntu gutsy) that will teach me to play with a step-by-step tutorial-type thing. Or something. Not sure what I want really, other than I learn better by example than instruction.

Any suggestions?

Not really, the basic rules for poker are so simple that it requires next to no instruction. I would suggest you start out with No Limit Hold Em, which you probably intended anyway... most other forms work very similar. You should find instructional videos on youtube and the like. You can get a playmoney account on Pokerstars - their client runs with wine, and start playing against real opponents. It has little to do with real life gameplay, but you will get the basic rules.
A good place to learn more is http://twoplustwo.com/ They have some excellent articles.
There are regular freeroll tournaments on full-tilt-poker. This is one of the few sites that offer freerolls for members without a cash account. I don't think it works with wine though.

The absolute best way, of course, is to play with friends. Body language is a very important part of the game when you play against inexperienced players, and it makes the game much more interesting... at least for me.

Have fun, and remember to gamble responsibly. :)

And if you want to watch some excellent poker, look for High Stakes Poker... some guy uploaded all seasons on youtube - look for 'Vailerth'.
Poker After Dark is also great, because there is not a single hand cut out. You see what's really happening, and not just the highlights cut together.

If you intended to start playing for money, I highly recommend you read up on bankroll management. This is a part that cannot be overestimated.

try carbon poker (look it on google, i think ther website is carbonpoker.com), but it's windows version so you'll have to use wine...
also there is a pacific poker that you can download at www.888.com
both of them are texas hold 'em...i played both and i recommend carbon poker...

about learning, also google for "texas holdem" or something similar...i know that i saw some flash tutorial on www.888.com but i can't find it now...

this is only textual explanation of rules:

if there's any holdem poker for linux, please put some link here...

IMHO, only way is to play live - for cash.

Learn or go broke.
Tuff but true ...

What a group of my friends did was, buy themselves a book on poker strategy, and then head as a group down to the local pub which offers amateur 5 dollar entry tournaments. They had a lot of fun and eventually got pretty good and branched out into playing for higher stakes at casinos and such.

As long as this thread is pumped by a spammer let me spam some of my own: if you want to talk poker get over to flopturnriver or 2+2.

If you're too lazy for that and you want a short guide to poker:

Start with a minimum deposit at the site of your choice.
Play 2NL (1c/2c blinds) until you reach $100
then play 5NL until $250
then 10NL until $750
25NL until $2000 etc

^^ If you want reasons, cu @ flopturnriver.

By then you will know what to do. Even at a respectable winrate this can take way longer than you think.
All the information you need is freely available on the internet. It takes a lot of dedication, discipline and humility to even beat the lowstakes games of today.
You won't benefit from books until you beat 100NL+ imo. There are no secrets in NLHE, all the information you need is out there.
Dunno about the state of poker on linux as I haven't used it in forever. :'(

Wow I must have been half asleep when I replied without realizing the thread was 3 years old :s
