No sound in UT2004 demo

I'm having problems getting sound in UT2004 demo. When I start the game I get an error message saying: "open /dev/[sound/]dsp: No such device".

I'm running kernel 2.6.7 with alsa support. I've no trouble getting sound with XMMS or Neverwinter Nights.

Does anybody have a clue as what to do?

I had the same problem.
Create a .openalrc file in your home directory with this inside :
(define devices '(alsa))
(define alsa-out-device "hw:0,0")
(define alsa-in-device "hw:0,0")

and if artsd is loaded, kill it !
killall artsd
I hope I help you.
