My Quake2 fps is about 3 or 4 - any suggestions?

Hi, I have been playing tyr-quake and finished it so decided to install quake2 and downloaded the one from icculus. I installed the rpm and got it working but the framerate is really low, down to about 3 or 4 fps. I have Mandriva 2007 a year old dell inspiron with Intel 915 card and drivers. Tyrquake runs perfectly in OpenGL and the funny thing is Quetoo runs perfectly too. My video card must be missing something I think but I don't nkow what to disable in quake2. The software mode runs perfectly too. It is driving me mad, can anyone help me sort this? all the best - ed
