Mandrake 9.1 no sound in Enemy Territory

Hello again,

I posted this in the mandrake forum, but it would probably make more sense in here.. When running Wolfenstein Enemy Territory there is no sound in the game. I saw this on the terminal window, perhaps someone can enlighten me:

------- sound initialization -------
/dev/dsp: Input/output error
Could not mmap /dev/dsp
------------------------------------

I tried chmod 777 /dev/dsp, same thing. Can someone help me troubleshoot this, or point me in the right direction?

Thanks,

Murray

Just run the following command as root in the console:

chmod o+rw /dev/dsp

This command will give users permission to use sound.
Hope that this helps...
Good luck.

P.S.: Why Mandrake, please do give a try to Slackware, you will be experimenting THE LINUX DISTRO...

I had the same problem but with Mandrake 9.2 - Hopefully the same for Mandrake 9.1...
Run harddrake and select the sound card device - you should see a list of possible driver modules to use in a dropdown - try the alternatives till you get sound as one of them is bound to work (I hope for your sake, did for me). I guess this is the same as manually changing the sound module in /etc/modules.conf but has the safeguard of letting you choose from a list of what harddrake thinks are compatible drivers.

You may have other programs running in the background accessing your sound card. Close those out, or try disabling alsa.

If you want a good gaming distro, give SuSE a shot. I find that it works the best for games (especially running WineX). You can get a copy of the CD's from ebay for about $10

Try this

I found that on my MB (Asus A7V8X-X) I had to make sure the surround volume was at max in alsamixer (graphic mixer doesn't show surround settings).

here's what I used

I had the same problem with enemy territory, but instead of using
"chmod o+rw /dev/dsp", I used "chmod +r /dev/dsp", and it fixed the problem. The command I used gives read permissions to *everyone*. It might not be the best idea if you are bent on system security, but if you are the only user of system you should be fine.

Are you using an nvidia card and built in sound by chance ? I had the same problem. Popped in a SB live and used it instead. That seems to fix the problem.
