LOWFPS10-20 Radeon9800 Slackware 10

I receive low frame rates when I am using opengl it seems. So far the only opengl games I have tested have been ut2003 and ut2004 demo. In these I get about 10-20 fps, more around 20. I am using the latest ati drivers from their website with kernel 2.4.26 and the KDE window manager. I am a bit confused as to why I am receiving such crappy performance from my radeon9800Pro. Any feedback regarding this matter is greatly appreciated : ) Oh yeah I am also using the latest nforce drivers for my nforce2 asus board and I am using XFree86 version 4.3. Maybe this is a considerable factor in my problem, Thanks.
